The art of adventure

London’s art fairs and auction houses celebrate the spirit of adventure in general and Oates, Scott and Shackleton in particular

Uniting Masterpiece and The Art & Antiques Fair Olympia and at a forthcoming Christie’s auction also, works of art and memorabilia connected to the escapades of Captain Lawrence ‘Titus’ Oates, Captain Robert Falcon Scott and Sir Ernest Shackleton feature strongly.

At Masterpiece – which runs until Wednesday – several exhibitors feature works relating to these much celebrated men. On Peter Harrington’s stand, a signed limited edition of E. H. Shackleton’s The Heart of the Antarctic and The Antarctic Book, 1909 is available for £27,500 ($36,485 or €32,810). The second features signatures of all the members of the shore party on two pages.

On another stand, Beetles & Huxley exhibit a silver gelatin contact print of Captain Oates with ponies in a stable at Cape Evans in May 1911. It was taken by Herbert Ponting (1870 – 1935) and is priced at £4,500 ($5,970 or €5,370).

At The Art & Antiques Fair Olympia – which closed yesterday – Bermondsey Wall based Opus Art offered a set of correspondence relating to the British Antarctic Expedition 1910. Featuring a signed letter from Scott of the Antarctic as its centrepiece, the correspondence thanks a donor for his ten guinea contribution and comes with a receipt. A price was not disclosed.

On the 7th July, Christie’s South Kensington will sell an oil on board painting titled A very gallant gentleman: Lawrence ‘Titus’ Oates walking out into the night. It was painted by George Percy Jacomb-Hood MVO, RBA (1857 – 1929) and is inscribed as having been created to benefit the Artists’ War Fund. A guide of £3,000 to £5,000 ($4,700 to $7,700, €4,300 to €7,300) has been set for it.
