St Jude and 999 don’t mix

Police urge public not to dial 999 during forthcoming St Jude Storm

 

With hurricane forces winds of upto 80mph predicted today and on Monday, police have requested that the public don’t call 999 about high winds unless it is a “genuine emergency”.

Though the route of the storm remains uncertain, it is believed that it will peak between 3am and 6am on Monday and will most likely hit the south coast worst. Forecasters have compared it to the Great Storm of 1987 and named it the St Jude Storm after the patron saint of lost causes whose feast date is on Monday also.

 

If high winds do strike, the police would prefer the public to call the non-emergency number 101 if they encounter problems. What on earth would George Orwell have made of that?
