Matthew Steeples asks: “Where does the victory of Obama leave the right?”
In the UK, David Cameron’s Conservative Party failed to secure a victory in 2010 and a wishy-washy coalition followed. It’s been a blessed nuisance and a disaster. In the US it’s a little different but Obama’s victory today more than anything else leaves an uncertain future for the Republicans.
Like him or loathe him, George W. Bush stood for something. He might not have been the brightest spark but he hit the nail on the head as and when he felt it necessary. The man who attempted to be his successor, John McCain, was more like a rotten fencepost and with Sarah Palin as sidekick, every time he got hit, he just sank further into the mire.
Mitt Romney allegedly brought a new era with him when he became leader of the Republican Party but he made the classic mistake of all politicians: he failed to pay attention to history. For that reason and for that alone, he’s now part of it. We have to ask: “Where on earth will the Republicans go next?”
