The most expensive gin in the world comes to the market at the most ludicrous price
The most expensive bottle of single-malt whisky ever sold went for £451,000 ($628,500, €570,000) in January 2014 but now gin is looking to get in the action. Two recently launched brands, Watenshi Gin and Silent Pool Gin, are respectively being marketed for £2,000 ($2,800, €2,500) and £5,000 ($7,000, €6,300) per bottle to the UK market.

Somewhat bonkers given the fact that the distillation process for gin is not that complicated, Japanese Watenshi Gin is made by The Cambridge Distillery and only available in Selfridges. Only six bottles are produced for the UK market each year and each comes in a standard sized hand-blown decanter bottle by Loris & Livia. It is described as having “notes of sweet citrus and spice, supported by bitter juniper and an incredibly long, complex finish”.
Coming in a much larger nine-litre bottle and set to go on display at Hedonism Wines in Mayfair on 10th March, Silent Pool Gin is made in Surrey and contains twenty-four botanicals including Bosnian juniper, Bulgarian angelica, honey and grain of paradise. It is presented in a hand painted and signed bottle by a little known artist named Laura Barrett.

Juniper “berries” are actually not berries at all, but tiny pine cones from the juniper bush. Juniper contains monoterpenes (which make up most of the essential oil) – alpha- and beta-pinene, sabinene, limonene, terpinen-4-ol, alpha-terpineol, borneol, geraniol, myrcene, camphene, camphor, alpha-eudesmo. It also containes sesquiterpenes – namely beta-caryophyllene, delta-cadinene, farnesol, gamma-elemente, gamma-muurolene, humulene, pregeijerene and many others.

It is worth investigating how artisanal gin is made. I have no information about these two companies at all. However one small gin distiller I visited bought in ethanol and then ran it through their still with various botanicals. That is rather a different approach from the traditional method of fermenting a mash and then distilling off the alcohol. – I believe it is technically called rectification.
My parents lived on gin and salmon, no wonder they both made 94 and were highly active until the day they died. My father was still driving his tractor around his estate and could still hit a flying crow with a .22 rifle, and my mother was still driving everywhere at 100mph in her turbo charged Audi. I had to take her to a speed awareness course once to save her license. I told her to pretend to be deaf so I could answer the questions for her because I knew if she opened her mouth she would be banned for life. On reflection, taking her there in my Ferrari probably didn’t help.
