The Charge of the Cheque Book

Vast Victorian Isle of Wight mansion connected to The Charge of the Light Brigade for sale – Only those with large cheque books need apply

During Queen Victoria’s reign, the wealthy flocked to the Isle of Wight to build maritime residences after she made it fashionable. One such mansion is currently for sale for £2.7 million ($4.1 million) after failing to sell for £3 million ($4.6 million) in 2011.

The house stands in stunning grounds of 9.44 acres

Designed for the soldier and politician Lord Calthorpe, who was present at the infamous Charge of the Light Brigade on the 25th October 1854 and whom later made allegations that the 7th Earl of Cardigan was responsible for the 107 deaths that day, Woodlands Vale House at Seaview, Ryde is described by selling agents Sotheby’s International Realty as “a landmark property”.

The 7-bedroomed house, which was constructed in 1870 in the French Renaissance style, includes 13,173 square foot of accommodation and that the agents neglect to give the floor area of the “extensive cellars” illustrates how truly vast this mansion is.

The west wing of the Grade II listed property is described as “currently unused” and the original lift as “not in use” and though the main part of the building looks to be in fine condition, there is plainly a lot left to do. Those without large cheque books need not apply.

    1. Very unusual house. Stunning views. Must need A LOT of work at that price. Just goes to show the value you get on the IOW.
