A Terrible Ticket

Section:

Matthew Steeples suggests the jailing of Fiona Onasanya MP over her lies over a speeding ticket is quite absurd

They say: “Don’t kick a dog when it’s down,” but plainly that doesn’t apply in the case of Fiona Onasanya, jailed yesterday for three months for lying to avoid a speeding ticket.

Yes, Onasanya commited an offence and yes, she should be punished but is it really necessary to lock her up? Undoubtedly named and shamed – though not yet forced to resign from her position as Member of Parliament for Peterborough – the cost alone of incarcerating this woman will be ludicrous.

Whilst the likes of the Arron Banks funded joke sheet Westmonster smugly ‘celebrated’ this news and condom campaigner and petulant child Tom Harwood described it as “such fun” on Twitter, I beg to differ.

If the forces of the law want to make examples of Members of Parliament, they should do more to stop the many that are still abusing their expenses and put right the damage done by the likes of the paedo politicians Lord Boothby and Sir Cyril Smith. As for Onasanya, a stint of litter picking and community service would have been quite enough.

  1. She deserves every minute and much more in the clink. I rarely disagree with your views but on this you are totally wrong. Lock her up for life.

    • Totally agree – she is a qualified solicitor, her mother sits in the House of Lords and her son (who she employed in the House of Commons as her assistant) is a convicted drug dealer. He has continued to attend the House and carries a security pass, drawing his salary. The family really should know better and could certainly keep the rules.
Lock her up! Teach them all that they cannot milk the system without paying the price of being a law-abiding citizen.
      No sympathy whatsoever. Disgraceful.

  2. I’m sorry, Matthew, but for once we disagree. While it seems perfectly acceptable for politicians to lie through their teeth without consequence these days, that privilege exist only in the arena of politics. Not in a court of law. This vile person’s refusal to take responsibility for a simple speeding ticket metastasized into blame shifting and deception, doubtless fueled by the arrogance of her electoral victory. That she now claims to suffer some debilitating disease just adds insult to injury. Lock her up and throw away the key.

  3. While I do agree this seems a bit excessive considering what some scum bags get for more serious offences. I don’t believe for one second she was targeted by the police because she supports Corbyn. I think it’s more like, the judge was pissed off because she thinks she could lie and get away with it, because of her position. Why she didn’t just fess up and pay the fine to begin with is beyond me. A better punishment would be for her to lose her position and get off the tax payer gravy train, then get a proper job. It’s obscene that she will still receive her MP salary and can also claim living away from home expenses, while she’s banged up. Maybe we should also back charge her board and lodgings? The world has gone mad.

  4. Hmm, I’m beginning to think there is a bit more to this case than we are being told. Why would the Attorney General be looking into this? Also why are earth would she be appealing the sentence if there’s a chance she could get more time added on? They are saying this is an unduly lenient sentence, but like I mentioned, considering what some low life undesirables get for terrible crimes, this wasn’t too bad. She should re think the appeal process, she could get the Death Penalty and a fine.

    • AG is reviewing because there’s been a complaint that sentence is unduly lenient. Onasanya is appealing the verdict not the sentence.
