Even the normally anti-PC Jeremy Clarkson has taken up the new popular cause of demanding Prince Philip be retired from the roads.
Yes, the royal had an accident (but one in which nobody was seriously hurt) and yes, he ought to wear a seatbelt whilst on the public highway, but one cannot expect this national security risk to exactly get out his bus pass and hop on the number 19.

She, without a shred of evidence to support her remarks, claimed the Queen was “likely annoyed” with her husband.
The Duke of Edinburgh, it was later revealed, supposedly passed an eye test and in spite of his faculties having most amusingly been off-centre for decades, the moaning Minnies should find something more important to get upset about. Drive on Phil!

Philip allegedly told onlookers that he was dazzled by the sun but Fairweather cast doubt on his explanation, claiming it was cloudy at the time.
The duke was pictured on Saturday driving a new Land Rover, seemingly without a seatbelt, 48 hours after the crash.

I am nudging up to 101 and nothing excites me more than borrowing one of Mr. Stunt’s motor cars and racing down the Piccadilly Underpass.
I can’t see very well but my dear wife tells me when the traffic lights are red so that I can zoom across them quickly to avoid collisions.
Are you kidding? If you are pulling out on to a main road, then the other car ALWAYS has the right of way. Being dazzled by the sun is no excuse. If you have any doubts at all – DO NOT pull out. It was sheer luck more than anything else that no one was killed – especially since his land rover flipped over. And the people in the other car (including a baby) ended up in hospital.
I’m also strongly reminded of an incident which took place in my home town a few years ago. An 87-year-old man had an accident on a petrol station forecourt. Police were called, but they were unable to directly revoke his licence because only the DVLA has that power. All because a selfish old fool didn’t want to give up his independence. And that’s exactly what we’re seeing here too. Phil could have easily got one of his chauffeurs to drive him around instead – but no. The fact that he had a brand-new car delivered within two days – and was pictured driving it on a public road without a seat belt shows real contempt for the law and the fact that he just caused a serious accident.
Bear in mind that this is the same man who retired from official Royal duties 18 months ago, admitted in an interview that his memory was going, and has been in and out of hospital over the past decade for a range of ailments, including a heart condition.
Such a person should NOT be driving. Does he have to kill someone before people wake up and realise this?
