With a self-professed desire to be “a female Harry Helmsley”, Debrah Lee Charatan was destined for a successful career in real estate in New York in the 1980s. Instead, having secretly married multi-millionaire Robert Durst – a cross dressing man linked to the the disappearance of his first wife and the murders of both his best friend and a one-time neighbour – in 2001, now all this opportunist will be associated with is sleaze and scandal. Lee Charatan runs BCB Property Management Inc. and BCB Properties LLB with Bennat Charatan Berger, her son from a previous relationship, and also benefits from Durst’s trusts as a result of her union with him. Curiously BCB doubled the size of its office space in Manhattan in early 2015 despite Debra Lee Charatan facing potential charges for aiding and abetting her husband’s attempts to flee to Cuba at around the same time. Here is a woman who definitely won’t go down quietly and one that once commented: “I knew if I couldn’t be a star, I wouldn’t be happy”. Her remark is now definitely one that very much has come home to roost.
