A rival to The Huffington Post from its inception, The Daily Beast was backed by the billionaire Barry Diller and currently has around 16 million unique views per month. It merged with Newsweek in 2010 and in August this year, was sold to IBT Media, owners of the International Business Times.

Lauded under Brown’s editorship as “elegant, savvy, urbane and writerly”, the title is indeed a good read. They’ve broken many news stories and their coverage of the Bernie Madoff case was especially excellent. With her departure from its helm to set up a company dedicated to “theatrical journalism”, however, we must ask: “Will The Beast now go to sleep?”

Tina Brown is a sour puss, it is a case of good riddance. Comedy and satire is a powerful tool to get a message over to a target audience. The new generation of journalists employed by the tabloids lack the general knowledge and life experience to be successful at humour and satire. Congratulation on a great publication, believe me, I have seen many.
