Back Zac

The Steeple Times backs Zac Goldsmith as the Conservative candidate to be Mayor of London

London needs a strong mayor and a worthy successor to Boris Johnson. With Sol Campbell sadly out of the running, that man now has to be Zac Goldsmith.

Today, in backing Zac Goldsmith we accept there are flaws to his beliefs. We do not support his views on the proposed third runway at Heathrow, but given Labour’s success in London in the General Election, it is essential that the Conservative Party have a candidate who can win. Out of the four on the shortlist, only one name resonates and that name is Zac Goldsmith.

Goldsmith will be good for London because he is independent minded. He has shown courage and resolve in speaking out – along with Labour MPs Simon Danczuk and John Mann – about historic VIP child abuse and is one of the few MPs untainted by allegations of financial sleaze. Like Mayor Bloomberg in New York, he is of independent means and like Boris Johnson before him, he is a larger than life character.

Today, The Steeple Times urges readers to back Zac Goldsmith in 2016. London needs him.

    1. 100% agree with your support albeit not the bit about the 3rd runway.

Boris was/is 100% right; we should build a brand new, fir for the 21st century, 4/6 runway airport and shut both crappy Heathrow and vile Gatwick, which should be turned into business parks and new towns.

I’ve had some dealings with Zac as an MP and he is first-rate. He even converted a few of my socialist friends to vote Tory in May. A very good man.

    2. Yes. There are flaws to his beliefs. Having a “name that resonates” should not be a sufficient reason to support a candidate. Having policies that resonate and a track record as an executive officer of a city are better criteria upon which to base support. Mr. Goldsmith’s NIMBY behaviour over the super sewer suggests that he is not the right candidate to serve the whole city. Stephen Greenhalgh’s policies and his strategies to achieve them are clear and enunciated. His experience as Deputy Mayor is impressive particularly in the area of policing. His unwavering opposition to the Thames Tideway Tunnel (aka Super Sewer) is one based both on principles and practical analysis of the other options available. He is against the £80-£120 levy that Thames water will impose on all Londoners (and beyond!) to pay for the project. Londoners need to eschew the superficial for substance and back Greenhalgh for Mayor. He is the worthy successor to Boris Johnson.
