Former attorney and Mayor of Biloxi, Mississippi from 1989 to 1993, Pete Halat was acquitted of but still is often connected to the 1987 murders of his business partner Judge Vincent Sherry and his wife. Jailed in 1997 for conspiracy to commit wire fraud, obstruction of justice, conspiracy to commit obstruction of justice and conspiracy to violate the racketeering statute for 16 years, Halat was released in 2013 and in a subsequent interview told WLOX News: “I wanted to [tell my side of the story] because there’s a lot of misconception out in the public. And I’ll be honest with you, I think most of that misconception comes from the reporting that the media has made about this case. And I wanted to try and clear up some of the issues”. He is said to now spend his time helping out at a local church.
