Nick Griffin visits Bashar Assad and an Assad inspired number plate appears in London
In a not so extraordinary move, Nick Griffin MEP, leader of Britain’s most obnoxious political party, the BNP, is in Syria to meet with President Bashar Assad, head of the regime currently controlling Syria. Never have two more suitable bedfellows been united.

Purporting to be on a “fact finding mission”, Mr Griffin crossed the border from Lebanon and tweeted that he found “life in the capital normal”. Of visiting the site of a rebel suicide bomb in the torn country, he added:
“Smelt like abattoir. Vile. Hague wants your taxes to arm these terrorists!”
Separately, back in London, a Bentley GTC has appeared on the streets of Knightsbridge and South Kensington with the number plate “A5AAD”. Many have speculated as to its ownership and undoubtedly it belongs to someone entirely unconnected. Perhaps, though, Bashar Assad just fled – unable to cope with a visit from the swivel eyed loon that is Nick Griffin. Stranger things have happened.

Yes – I read something about his visit. I wonder what Griffin wishes to learn from one of the Middle East’s most ethnically diverse nations. A country which has large populations of Kurds, Palestinians, Armenians and Greeks.
Of course there is no comparision whatsover between these two men. Griffin is a driven by racial hatred. Plus – he is a total dork.
Assad is driven by power and certainly is no racist or nationalist. Although I have not studied his background in detail I would probably compare him to someone like Slobodan Milosevic – quite clever and cunning in many ways and a pragmatist. There are a few comparisions between Syria and that of former Yugoslavia. Both complex and therefore widely misunderstood by Western politicians and very dangerous places to interfere. In Syria it would increase the risk of ethnic and religious conflict being stirred up either by the rebels or Assad. Arming the rebels in Syria would be akin to us arming Croatia which was responsible for the biggest single episode of ethnic cleansing since World War 2.(in 1995) Or even like arming the Kosovo Liberation Organisation, its members which now make up the government in Kosovo who are currently being investigated for war crimes and trafficking in human organs.
Anyway as for Griffin’s fact finding mission, he is probably right about life being relatively normal in Damascus. So was Belgrade. He is probably right about the terrorists who we seem to want to arm. However I hardly think Assad would have invited someone as gormless and as stupid as him to point out the facts or to give the regime credibility. If I was Assad he would be the last person I would invite. Anyway – I am sure there are many far more intelligent and credible observers who could explain the facts as they are on the ground. Sadly though I doubt our government has got the sense to steer well clear of Syria, no matter who is advising them. One thing which is always certain is that the mistakes of history are always repeated over and over.
