Blooming over?

Section:

Has UKIP reached the end of the line?

In recent weeks the United Kingdom Independence Party has suffered a series of setbacks. Today, with Godfrey Bloom MEP having quit, one has to ask whether this organisation was just a flash in the pan or whether it still is a force to be reckoned with.

Stripped of the party whip last week in the wake of his “sluts” joke, Bloom, issued the following statement:

“I have felt for some time now that the New UKIP is not really right for me anymore perhaps than New Labour was right for the Denis ‘The beast of Bolsover’ Skinner… I shall sit out my term as an independent and give my wholehearted support to Jane Collins who is almost certainly going to be the next UKIP MEP… I shall of course retain my membership”.

Separately, with other UKIP members and elected officials being labelled as racists, Nigel Farage’s control and attempts to make his party appear “grown up” are appearing increasingly facile.

If UKIP intends to bloom and prosper, the only way forward is to prune out the party’s dead wood. Nigel Farage should lead the way and deal out a large dose of weedkiller.

    1. Godfrey Bloom indulges in the odd stand up comedy routine, and slides deep into a shithole. The internet is a tsunami when it comes to slut jokes. The incompetent manner in which Nick Clegg dealt with the Lord Rennard harassment allegation. John Prescott abuse of office. Sticks and stones will break my bones, but words will never harm me. Matthew you don’t want to hear my jokes, you will fall off your chair. Bloom the old timer has a sense of humour.

    2. I suspect there are as many, if not more racists, in the Conservative and Labour parties except they are better at keeping it quiet. Bloom is Jewish and the idea he could be racist preposterous. We forget UKIP is a young party: it will have growing pains, but the fact is that its membership is growing at a rate that now dwarfs the ludicrous LibDems….and I suspect that it has a more potent group of grassroots supporters who will turn out to do the awful chores. I have met Farage, briefly, on two occasions and he is a natural leader.

    3. This is a classic witch-hunt by the Establishment, like the weak disclosure by Channel 4 ref. Farage’s school days, in order to disrupt their imminent onslaught. Bloom is a cheeky monkey for sure, but the wagons are rolling towards unseating or at least disturbing the other main parties in the run up to both the Euro elections and ours. The worst is that they might hold a balance of power like the weak Liberals and if that were the case I’m sure we all have a better England than today. This party speaks our mind when other parties might be stifled. Roll on the elections and watch the fun!

    4. Nigel Farage and his United Kingdom Party cannot not do any worse than the main Political Parties have already done. Farage will guarantee the electorate a vote on Europe. We need a Political Party that is in touch with reality and speak the language of the people, “Common sense and not Euro trash”.

    5. Godfrey Bloom was a panellist on “Have I Got News for You” He was hilarious in some of the clips shown.
He is funnier than most of our professional stand up comedians. His comedy sketches are funnier and more original than anything Sacha Baron Cohen can come up with. Godfrey should not bother with politics, he will be more useful in comedy and satire.
