Magic & Merton

As Debbie McGee puts the number plate ‘MAG1C’ up for auction, we remind readers of her legendary and laughable appearance on the ‘Mrs Merton Show’

News that Debbie McGee, widow of the late magician Paul Daniels, is trying to sell the number plate ‘MAG1C’ with an asking price of £150,000 is enough to make one giggle, but it also provides reminder of the former ballet dancer’s laughable appearance on the Mrs Merton Show in 1997.

On the show, when asked: “What first, Debbie, was it that attracted you to the multi-millionaire Paul Daniels?” by Caroline Aherne, the dimwitted McGee smiled and chuckled plainly unaware of the undertone of what she’d been mockingly asked. Now, the laugh is plainly on her: Who on earth would be stupid enough to pay such a ludicrous sum for a tacky number plate.

  1. Mercedes Benz were constantly trying to buy Max Bygraves’s personalized number plate, MB, off him, offering obscene sums of money. He never did sell it to them.

  2. To be fair, there are a lot of professional magicians who would buy that number plate if they had the money. I could imagine Dynamo or Derren Brown being interested. Or even just a collector of unusual numberplates in general.

As for Ms. McGee, I don’t know her so I can’t say for sure how intelligent she is. However, she definitely didn’t come across as dimwitted when she gave interviews about her late husband’s illness.

Their marriage clearly wasn’t a sham as they were together for over 30 years – even if both could come across as a bit eccentric. I did find it a bit bizarre that she put an autographed photo of herself on his coffin at his funeral.

    • Well said, Ella. Agree with you fully. Their marriage was one of the strongest in show business and I believe they were truly in Love, not unlike some of the obscene gold diggers of today.
