Former Wiltshire home of ‘Lord of the Flies’ author Sir William Golding for sale for 562% more than he sold it for in 1985
The one-time home of the author and Nobel Prize in Literature and Booker Prize winner Sir William Golding, CBE (1911 – 1993) has gone on sale for £795,000 ($1.1 million, €891,000 or درهم3.9 million) in spite of needing modernisation.
Ebble Thatch at Mead End, Bowerchalke, near Salisbury was the residence of the Lord of the Flies author in 1940 and between 1958 and 1985 and it was here that he met his fellow villager, the scientist James Lovelock CH, CBE, FRS. He sold the house in 1985 on deciding to move to a Georgian mansion in Cornwall for £120,000 (the equivalent of £334,000, $441,000, €374,000 or درهم1.6 million today).

5 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms? No American, or Brit under the age of 40 is going to make do with THAT. A quick rule of thumb for number of loos needed these days is x + 2, where x is bedrooms.
Many Americans and Brits under 40 make do with less than your “x + 2” formula. Although Hollywood may pretend otherwise, many Americans as well as Brits are far from affluent.
I love it even though I never did like the maintenance on those thatched cottages. I think it’s a steal at the price, and spend another 100 grand on giving it a bit of a lift, and you’ll have a pad worth over the mill.
Not speaking as a property pro of course, just common sense.
PS: Lord of the flies was the first book I read.
David. I KNOW…. I was specifically referring to those with the money to buy joints like this one. My tone of voice, and what I thought was gentle hint of sarcasm, did not apparently come through in the writing. Sigh.
