Matthew Steeples selects three of South West London’s best pubs

 

The Duchess, 101 Battersea Park Road, Battersea, SW8 4DS

With works by the sniper-turned-snapper John Stoddart gracing the walls and around 40 gins to choose from, this lovingly restored Victorian ale house is now a destination drinking spot. Opposite the soon to be completed Battersea Power Station construction site, patrons can also dine on pie, mash and liquor and fish and chips.

 

The Grenadier, 18 Wilton Row, Belgravia, SW1X 7NR

Hidden behind The Lanesborough and The Berkeley Hotel and known only to locals and those told by the concierges of such establishments, this former officers’ mess has played host to King George IV, the Duke of Cambridge and Madonna. It is a favourite of the Campaign for Real Ale and is allegedly haunted by the ghost of a subaltern beaten to death for cheating at cards.

 

The Cross Keys, 1 Lawrence Street, Chelsea, SW3 5NB

In spite of an attempt by a ruthless property developer to turn it into a mega mansion, The Cross Keys has now been rejuvenated and turned into a destination for both drinking and dining. Aside from cask ales, an all day Sunday roast is definitely one of the best on offer in London and the Scotch eggs are a definite must.
