Lavish Landies

A selection of the most unusual and expensive Land Rovers currently for sale; prepare to be wowed

Over two million Land Rovers were made between 1948 and 2015 and undoubtedly being the strongest workhorses on the road, a high number survive. Whilst one of the final cars off the production line – admittedly built with the help of 33 personalities – sold for £400,000 ($491,000, €465,000 or درهم1.8 million) in 2015 in a charity auction at Bonhams, ‘ordinary’ examples are also now selling for increasingly high sums.

To illustrate this upward price trend for the “best 4×4 by far”, we have chosen three of the finest Land Rovers on offer at present. A 1959 Land Rover Series II in deep bronze green that is currently for sale for £49,995 ($61,400, €58,300 or درهم225,600) with the Land Rover Centre in Huddersfield is being marketed as “better than new”. It was the subject of a “nut-and-bolt, ground-up” rebuild in 2014, has spent its entire life in Lincolnshire and was recently the subject of a five page feature in Classic Land Rover magazine.

An especially unusual early Land Rover comes next in the form of a 1959 Series II 109 by Cuthbertson of Lanarkshire. Capable of going where even conventional Land Rovers might not venture and complete with tracks and power steering, this unusual beast’ is for sale for £84,995 ($104,000, €99,100 or درهم383,600 million) through John Brown 4×4 of Thirsk, North Yorkshire. One could just imagine this machine upstaging the ‘playboy racing’ Arabs in Knightsbridge’s Sloane Street but realistically, it’d be better more at home on marshland or at a military range.

More suited to SW3, however, is a one-off 2014 Land Rover Defender XS station wagon by Afzal Khan. This 6.2-litre V8 “urban chic” vehicle is offered for the staggering sum of £249,975 ($307,000, €292,000 or درهم1.1 million) through Khan Automobiles and has a modified chassis extended to 400mm and a wide body extension of 152mm. It is named the ‘Flying Huntsman’ but is as likely to see a grouse moor as Wayne Rooney.
