My friend and I attended the opening night last night and thought this eccentric cavern an ideal setting for a play that sets the tale of Sophocles’ Oedipus Rex in Margaret Thatcher’s Britain. With a cast that included Jonathan Saunders – who undoubtedly shone out as the protagonist Eddy – this tale of love, loss and decay is peppered with colourfully emotive language and the darkest of humour.

Afterwards, we sat in the pub upstairs. A couple at the next table had come to celebrate their wedding anniversary. One berated the other for not wanting to go running, cycling or horse riding and as the lady paid the bill, she commented:

“I’m paying. It’s only £80. It’s the only thing I’m going to get after all. You get the next one: We’ll be at The Ritz”.

Her husband responded:

“Being married means you never have to say sorry or buy each other shit”.

How terribly apt. This pair truly wouldn’t have been out of place in Greek.

Tickets for Beyond Theatre’s Greek are priced from £9 to £12. The play is performed nightly at 7.30pm with a matinee on the final day, Saturday 30th November, at 2.30pm.
