Kester ThomasDescribed as “one of the nicest guys on London’s club and bar scene”, Kester Thomas worked at Kitts, the Buddha Bar and The Sanderson. His drink making ability was second to none. This “truly unique gentleman” passed far too young but he’s definitely now mixing the finest cocktails in the sky.

A self-publicist we’d rather not have heard about

Our dislike for Speaker John Bercow is well known but equally ridiculous is a report in today’s Evening Standard about an incident between him and a Range Rover Sport driver named Nathalie Pulford in Ixworth Place, Chelsea. (more…)

  • Henry Wyndham

    Henry Wyndham

Henry WyndhamA collector of English drawings and watercolours since the age of 14 and second to none as an auctioneer, Eton educated Wyndham hammered down Giacometti’s Walking Man sculpture for £65 million in 2010 and Rubens’ Massacre of the Innocents for £49.5 million in 2002. His glasses saved his sight in a shooting accident in Scotland in 2012 and as a result, he’s turned to raising funds for eye hospitals. Donations reached £579,000 by the end of September 2013 and given that he also just happens to be the model for the tall, distinguished auctioneer portrayed in Lara Croft: Tomb Raider, it looks as if he’ll be raiding a few more coffers for this good cause yet.

Third incident involving a DUKW vehicle in 2013

Last weekend, we reported on one of Boris Johnson’s new Route Master buses causing a six-vehicle pile up in Chelsea. Today, it was the turn of a London Duck Tour DUKW vehicle named Cleopatra to endanger the lives of those who’d paid upto £65 to take a trip along the Thames. (more…)

New £354,000 Route Master bus crashes on Chelsea Bridge Road on second day in service

On Saturday, on seeing one of Boris Johnson’s new Route Master buses on the Kings Road, I commented about how impressive this vehicle was. Little did I expect, therefore, that only a day later, the very same vehicle would have ended up in a six vehicle pile up on Chelsea Bridge Road. (more…)

The latest bizarre turn in the John Goodman case

Rather like the twisters that often hit the coast of Florida, the story of the case of the polo mogul and multimillionaire Goodman stereo manufacturing heir John Goodman has again taken another turn.

On Friday, it was revealed that a juror in the case that had resulted in Goodman’s conviction had lied about his ex-wife’s own DUI during jury selection. As a result, a retrial has now been granted.

  • Danny Cipriani

    Danny Cipriani

Danny CiprianiThis London born rugby player’s mum learnt ‘The Knowledge’ and worked as a taxi driver so she could send him to a private school. Cipriani has no connection to the restaurant and hotel empire of the same name, but his model girlfriend, Kelly Brook, “sent a message” to him by dining at the London outpost when they split in 2010. After the pair were reunited in the spring of 2013, he was injured after being hit by a bus during a drunken pub crawl in Leeds. Of the incident, he commented: “I can’t believe I am not dead… I am a very lucky boy”.

The tragic story of Oscar Pistorius and the death of Reeva Steenkamp

Oscar Pistorius was a man many rightly came to admire. He achieved the unthinkable on the track and was, as his father, Henke, pointed out “a man strong beyond his years”. In an advert for Nike, he himself is quoted as saying:

“I was born without bones below the knee. I only stand 5ft 2. But this is the body I have been given. This is my weapon. How I conquer. How I wage my war. This is how I have broken the world record 49 times. How I became the fastest thing on legs. This is my weapon. This is how I fight”.

Our picture of the week is of another advertisement in which Pistorius featured for Nike. Titled, rather unfortunately, “I am the bullet in the chamber”, these are words that will now haunt the athlete forever more.

Whatever the truth is behind this tragic story, one person is dead and another’s life and career is now ruined. May the case of Oscar Pistorius be a lesson to us all.

Charmian Brent (better known as Charmian Biggs)

In the autumn of 2012, an ITV1 series, Mrs Biggs, dramatised the life story of this headmaster’s daughter from Reigate, Surrey. In it, Sheridan Smith (pictured here with the real Mrs Biggs) portrayed a lady of steely reserve who is intelligent, articulate and courageous. The former wife of the Great Train Robber Ronnie Biggs has now built a new life for herself in Melbourne, Australia as an editor, publisher and journalist and on crime, her views are simple: “[It] doesn’t pay in any way, shape or form.”
