There are currently around 12,500 red phone boxes nationwide but over 6,700 are in danger of closure due to a rise in the use of mobile phones. many sold off or decommissioned BT recently revealed that usage of its payphones has halved over the last two years and the telecommunications giant is searching for alternate uses. Earlier this week engineers replaced a phone box in the centre of Peterborough, Cambs., with a red kiosk converted to hold an ATM machine.
