Hero of the Hour 2023 – Oscar Award Winning Actor James Martin

As the modest ‘An Irish Goodbye’ actor James Martin wins an Oscar, we join those celebrating his truly deserved success and his becoming the first star with Down’s Syndrome to win at the Academy Awards

Many readers of The Steeple Times are big fans of the North Yorkshire born television chef James Martin and one of our readers, Gary Hazell, is involved in distributing his eponymous gin. 50-year-old farmer’s son Mr Martin brings joy to many every Saturday on ITV1 and his “silky smooth, flavor rich gin” most definitely goes down a treat; his passion for cars both classic and modern is also clear and he is most certainly just the kind of role model the nation needs.

After winning a BAFTA in February for his role in the short film An Irish Goodbye and last night – on the very day of his 31st birthday – adding to that with an Oscar at the 95th Academy Awards, another James Martin is now also making waves. Here, indeed, is a Northern Irishman most definitely headed to becoming one of the best-loved and most deserved luminaries of 2023.

This particular James Martin is a rising star actor whose career began when he was a guest on his father Ivan Martin’s U105 radio show on Father’s Day and Christmas Day in his youth.

Of this in December 2014, the radio presenter remarked of his son: “I never look at my son James and think: ‘There’s James and he has Down’s Syndrome.’ I just think: ‘There’s James.’ It has always been that way… James is a remarkable young man and I admire him so much. He has never let his disability hold him back. He is an ambassador for Mencap and he has spoken at the European Parliament and to the Assembly at Stormont.”

Responding about his father in the same interview for the Belfast Telegraph, the undoubted star of last night’s ceremony in Los Angeles added: “My dad and I are very close… We have great craic and a lot of banter… Dad is also supportive of my acting… I love to act and want to be a good actor.”

The 23:29-minute film was the second collaboration between co-directors Tom Berkeley and Ross White. It was released on 4th March 2022 and of his son’s success winning an Oscar for it, Ivan Martin today told BBC Radio Ulster: “All I ever wanted was for James was that he’d be happy and, I tell you what, he’s happy now… It’s been a journey. You get to the Oscars and everybody keeps saying the prize is getting there, but, truth to tell, you want to win and I had my doubts about it because one of the opposition films was a Disney film and they had it in the last week… They had really been ramping up the promotion for it, but, calm heads win the end… A film we can all be proud of… It’s just crazy. There were a few tears shed, but what an achievement. Just delighted.”

Subsequently James Martin appeared in the BBC’s Ups and Downs and starred opposite Anna Friel in ITV’s Marcella and last night he was well and truly celebrated. Speaking ahead of An Irish Goodbye being named the Best Live Action Short, Martin shared:

“The timing of it has been just perfect. You know, you can’t plan somebody’s birthday to be on the Oscars. So, it’s a big day, [but] I just want to enjoy it really, just enjoy the experience.”

“I was just in the airport going down the escalator and [I heard some say:] ‘Well done An Irish Goodbye.’ ‘I’m just thinking to myself: My God this is amazing.’”

“I always say to people, never judge a book by its cover. Not just getting a BAFTA, but going to LA is a big deal… It’s just nice to be included.”

Later, after his win and having had the 3,000 audience sing Happy Birthday to him, the modest-to-his-core actor told BBC News: “We’re just so proud to be representing Northern Ireland. To be on that stage in front of all of our cinematic heroes – it was a special moment.”

An Irish Goodbye – which was written and directed by Tom Berkeley and Ross White and also stars Seamus O’Hara, Paddy Jenkins and Michelle Fairley – has been described as a “black comedy following the reunion of estranged brothers Turlough and Lorcan following the untimely death of their mother.”

Going further in an 18-page press notes release, the 23:29-minute film’s production team added:

“Under the watchful eye of odd-ball parish priest Father O’Shea, the brothers’ pained reunion is worsened by the fact Turlough must now make new care arrangements for Lorcan, who has Down Syndrome.”

“A robust and dedicated farmer, Lorcan’s dream of continuing to work the land he grew up on is thwarted when Turlough decides he’s sending him to live with their aunt on the other side of Ireland.”

“But when the brothers discover an unfulfilled bucket list belonging to their late mother, Lorcan senses an opportunity: he’ll only agree to leave the farm once he and Turlough have themselves completed every single wish on their mother’s list… All one-hundred of them.”

Today, we join all those saluting the actor James Martin and urge readers to join us in raising a glass to his latest award with a snifter or two of the chef of the same name’s London Dry Gin. Cheers!

On-stage to collect their award; the team behind the film used their acceptance speech to sing ‘Happy Birthday’ to the star-of-the-show. Co-director Ross White also stated: “Deary me, thank you so much the Academy for this incredible, incredible honour. Thank you to our fellow nominees, all the nominees for your work, and your work it inspires us so very, very much. Thank you to everybody back home and Northern Ireland who helped us make this film. We wish we had the time to list you all here, but you know who you are.” He then continued: “There’s something very important we’d like to speak about as well. This award is actually the second most important thing about today, because it’s this man’s birthday. He’s out here in Hollywood, wearing a leopard print suit jacket. We’d love to use the rest of our time up here to sing for James.”

Vicky Vanishes – Lady Victoria Hervey Quits Twitter

Party pest and piffle peddling pillock Lady Victoria Hervey vanishes from Twitter; the mouthy moron likes to criticise others, yet clearly can’t take criticism herself

First, earlier this month, in spite of having more front than Harrods and a mouth larger than Russia, prattling pillock and daughter of a convicted thief Lady Victoria Hervey blocked The Steeple Times on Twitter.

Clearly incapable of taking criticism on the chin, in spite of happily taking media money to peddle piffle about Prince Andrew and Virginia Giuffre, cowardy custard Lady Victoria has now gone further and closed down her Twitter account completely. She did so after being confronted by The Mail on Sunday’s Charlotte Griffiths about her pestering the crusading author of Ghislaine Maxwell: An Unauthorized Biography Kirby Sommers on the social media platform.

Responding to a request from Griffiths about why she had contacted Sommers “seeking dirt” on Virginia Giuffre, ‘Lady Herpes’ abruptly answered: “Mistook her for someone else. I never use Twitter. Had an intern do it, hence all the typos. I don’t write like that.” Now, Vicky dear: Please try pulling the other one; next!

To purchase a copy of ‘Ghislaine Maxwell: An Unauthorized Biography’ by crusading author Kirby Sommers, click here.

Lady Victoria Hervey Twitter account blocked
Lady Victoria Hervey blocked ‘The Steeple Times’ account and that of Matthew Steeples on Twitter also in early February 2022. If asked, she’d probably claim that she got her no doubt unpaid intern to have done that for her too.
Lady Victoria Hervey Twitter account closed
By Sunday 20th February, the @Thebritishladyv Twitter account appeared with the message: “This account doesn’t exist.” No doubt the aristoprat capable of leaving a trail of debts amounting to £350,000 when her Knightsbridge knicker flogging boutique went under, got her intern – if he or she actually exists – to do the closing down for her.
    https://twitter.com/KirbySommers/status/1493201393439719429
On 14th February, Kirby Sommers shared the begging letter sent to her by Lady Victoria Hervey on her Twitter feed. In it, the birdbrained blonde asked: “Wondering if you have any diet [sic] for me on Maria or Viginia.” She clearly meant “dirt,” but yet again illustrated that she most definitely should never enter a spelling bee contest.
    Instagram 1
Elsewhere on Instagram (a technological medium she seems capable of using herself apparently), illustrating that she remains in cahoots with Ghislaine Maxwell’s PR team the lover of threesomes included a link to Jay Beecher’s TheMaxwellFiles.com – a website filled with utter gibberish about the case against ‘The Bouncing Czech’s’ deviant daughter. She also referenced a story from ‘The Mail on Sunday’ by Sharon Churcher – the journalist who first revealed the picture of Prince Andrew, Ghislaine Maxwell and Virginia Roberts to the world in February 2011 – and aside from suggesting “[she’s] lucky it’s 2022 or she would be hung for TREASON” added: “These people are the bottom feeder gutter rats.”
    Instagram 2
In other Instagram story posts, the “toff you’ll never see on ‘Mastermind’” demanded that Ghislaine Maxwell be released “until her new trial date” and claimed that the mucky madam sex trafficker “isn’t safe” in the Metropolitan Detention Center. The one-time lover of both Prince Andrew allegedly and Jeffrey Epstein definitely awaits sentencing on 28th June 2022 and aside from being monitored continually, has the luxury of a floor of the prison to herself and all sorts of privileges. The only thing this wicked criminal hasn’t got is Krug on tap. Diddums.
    Lady-Victoria-Hervey-Instagram
In June 2020, further illustrating the vileness of her tongue, Lady Victoria – who has been known also to come out with clangers including “I’m not stupid. I’m not a dumb model” and “[I aim to become] the next Kate Winslet – but with class” – was deservedly lambasted after she attacked the Black Lives Movement in spite of her own ancestors having been abolitionists. After ‘The Steeple Times’ first and the ‘Mail on Sunday’ subsequently named and shamed her, she deleted her clearly highly offensive Intagram post, but it remains clear that she still doesn’t realise what an utter berk she truly is.

40,000 turn on Mental Monster Merelize van der Merwe

As our Change.org petition seeking to ban giraffe slayer Merelize van der Merwe tops 40,000 signatures, the psycho publicity addict shared a CBS documentary of another mental monster killing a giraffe

Elephant and giraffe murderer Merelize van der Merwe used to love the fact that 400 people she termed “snowflakes” signed a petition seeking to ban her from Facebook. Now, in less than a month, our new petition aiming to achieve the same has topped 40,000.

Now, aside from banning us from commenting on her Facebook “public figure” page, van der Merwe has attempted to justify her actions by sharing a video of another monster, an American named Tess Talley, bragging about killing a giraffe also.

In doing so, this deranged deviant has yet again proven she’s nothing but clinically insane and again today we urge those that haven’t already to help get our Change.org petition to ban her from the social media medium past 50,000 signatures. Please do so by clicking here.

40,000 turn on Mental Monster Merelize van der Merwe – The YouTube video shared by Merelize van der Merwe as part of her campaign to justify massacring a giraffe featured another wicked wench who’d done the same thing named Tess Talley.

Deranged deviant Merelize van der Merwe on…

    Death threats

“So, after all these death threats from people sitting comfortably behind a computer 15,000 kilometers away, it made me realise one thing… I haven’t hunted enough! So, I’ll go hunt some more tonight!”

    Mental disorders

“We have seen mental disorders grow especially with social media giving these people a voice and openly expressing unnatural hatred towards people they never met with Instagram and Facebook. We in the hunting industry I’m sure deals [sic] with more of these unstable people then the psychiatric ward itself.”

“So please next time if someone attacks you for hunting, just remind them they forgot their pills this morning and let’s get these people under control.”

    Truth and poetry and hunting

“Truth is like poetry and most people f**king hate poetry… Same when it comes to hunting and conservation people only listen to what they want to hear and not the truth.”

    Liberals

“It’s just these new age liberals who piss and moan and say hunting isn’t natural… You aren’t natural.”

    Kenya

“Kenya has sold its soul to the devil, AKA animal rights activists.”

    Prince Harry

“Soon he’ll be back in diapers.”

    Donald Trump

“I love Trump because he pisses off all the people I can’t stand.”

“What a privilege it was to look up to a President and know how a President should run a country. Today many are heartbroken across the world.”

“I salute you President Trump. What a man you are and may God bless you on your next chapter in life.”

    On those that opposed Trump

“Eat a bag of dicks you dirty f**king communists.”

    Celebrating killing an elephant

“After the elephant was down I went to buy beer and gin for team motivation. The next day I looked like a red crab.”

    Why she likes killing elephants

“Tell me how hunting [elephants] doesn’t benefit people and the ecosystem.”

How she feels after a “kill”

“I was like a child for two weeks, counting the days. Afterwards I was flooded with emotions.”

    People who protect elephants

“Never underestimate the power of stupid.”

People who object to the vile images she shares on social media

“To the dumb f**k who tried to report my video, take this and shove it where the sun doesn’t shine.”

“If you’re looking for a safe space, my page ain’t it… Move along, snowflake.”

    Charity and hunting

“Charity is not sustainable, hunting is.”

    Killing endangered species and conservation

“The only people protecting these animals are trophy hunters.”

    Why she massacres endangered species

“In the end I’m nothing but yet another slave to this trade and a willing one too. The only time I find peace is living life on the edge. I firmly believe one is born like this and not made.”

“We will keep on fighting the animal rights mafia propaganda as hunting has proven sustainable for wildlife.”

“A day without blood is like a day without sunshine… Nature is not a Disney fairytale.”

    Merelize The Monster

As our petition seeking Facebook banish Merelize van der Merwe tops 25,000 signatures in less than a week, this giraffe slaying monster sickly shares a video of her kill on YouTube

After we featured the story of a monster whose husband bought her the ‘opportunity’ to slaughter a harmless giraffe on Sunday and began a Change.org petition seeking to ban Merelize van der Merwe from Facebook, it went viral.

Today, in spite of the Mirror, Unilad and The Sun featuring our petition against the citrus farming freak, van der Merwe audaciously announced: “I created work for 11 people that day… And a lot of meat for the locals.”

Worse still, ignoring international outrage about what she so callously did, in a 1:34-minute video that YouTube has disgracefully allowed to remain live, van der Merwe has shared footage of herself killing the giraffe “on a private farm in Smartwater, Limpopo.” She accompanied it with a tune by Johnny Clegg titled Scatterlings of Africa and the following captions:

“Shot with a 30-06. Perfect frontal neck shot!”

“The second rifle was a .450 Rigby. Was awesome to do my coup de grace, even if it wasn’t necessary!”

“Thank you to my wonderful husband and my PH Chrisjan Bakker!”

    Getaway Ghislaine

As two victims of Jeffrey Epstein do deals with his estate, will mucky madam Ghislaine Maxwell now getaway from the charges against her?

Ghislaine Maxwell’s purchase of a house named ‘Tuckedaway’ was indicative of her arrogant decision to try to evade justice and now, maybe, if she pulls off a coup she’ll name her next residence ‘Getaway.’

Yesterday, as rumours of Donald Trump likely offering the mucky madam a pardon swirled on Twitter, author Kirby Sommers published a blog that declared: “Is the case against Ghislaine Maxwell unraveling?”

In it, tellingly, Sommers suggested that ‘Bouncing Bob’s’ daughter “is probably doing cartwheels in her 6 x 9 jail cell” and argued:

“Two victims of the three victims expected to testify as witnesses in the United States v Ghislaine Maxwell case have accepted settlements from Jeffrey Epstein’s estate. This will no doubt weaken the government’s stance against Maxwell and may, in fact, signal the beginning of the end of any possible indictment.”

“Maxwell’s attorneys had begun to argue, as early as July 14th, 2020, during the initial bail hearing, that the case against her is ‘weak, supported by only three accusers who are expected to testify about events that are more than 25 years old.’”

“During the past couple of weeks Annie Farmer and a second ‘Jane Doe’ (believed to be soap opera actress Nadia Bjorlin) accepted settlements from the Epstein’s Victims’ Compensation Program. The restitution fund, handled by Kenneth Feinberg – who was also the ‘9/11 Fund Administrator’ – requires them to dismiss any pending litigation against Jeffrey Epstein’s estate and any of his former employees. Ghislaine Maxwell among them. It also requires they dismiss the civil lawsuits they each initiated against their alleged abuser: Maxwell.”

Sommers has a point and with PR peddler Brian Basham elsewhere being given free reign by the likes of the Daily Mail to hawk nonsensical stories that Ghislaine Maxwell is “suffering” in hell-like conditions in jail, it is right that the sensible and the sane continue to call for this vile vixen to be brought to justice.

Getaway Ghislaine – Will Ghislaine Maxwell get a pardon as Donald Trump departs office, will prosecutors drop charges against her or will she actually face the trial she truly, genuinely deserves in 2021? Getaway Ghislaine – Whilst Ghislaine Maxwell’s time in prison has been amusingly parodied, the seriousness of the possibility of her potentially now evading justice thanks to some dodgy deals and/or Donald Trump is quite shocking.

    Dumb Daniel

Matthew Steeples calls out Daniel Hannan for ludicrously not wanting to encourage British people to consume locally produced food

Daniel Hannan claims to support localism. He wants to end Value Added Tax and replace it with a local sales tax, set by local councils. The ex-MEP is also obsessed with national sovereignty and whilst often bizarrely banging on about trading with Ethiopia also, today basically said he wishes to discourage British farmers to produce more on their own land.

Dumb Daniel – Daniel Hannan does not want locally produced food – Matthew Steeples calls out Daniel Hannan for ludicrously not wanting to encourage British people to consume locally produced food. “Even if we could grow all our own food, doing so would only make us poorer” article in ‘The Telegraph,’ Sunday 5th April 2020.
Arch-Brexiteer Daniel Hannan has been mocked recently for his ludicrous analysis of how coronavirus will change our lives. In a column for ‘The Telegraph’ he bizarrely announced: “If coronavirus has one silver lining it should be the return of the bow and curtsy”. He elaborated: “A handshake can be an awkward thing – a clumsy, clammy grapple. But a woman breathes something of herself into her curtsy. She can make the gesture demure or haughty, coy or brazen… She can swish her skirts alluringly or bob coldly. The same is true, mutatis mutandis, for men. A bow allows you to convey precisely the degree of respect or affection you consider appropriate.”
Yesterday, at a local pub, I was able to fill this empty 750ml gin bottle with locally produced beer for just £2. Daniel Hannan: “What’s wrong with that?”

In an article for The Telegraph, this fan of Enoch Powell claimed “COVID-19 is pushing us to protectionism” and added that: “The idea that growing your own food makes you more secure sounds plausible, but turns out to be nonsense… If you think about it, national food self-sufficiency makes no more sense than village food self-sufficiency.”

Whilst rightly Hannan admits “we have one of the most innovative agri-food sectors on the planet,” wrongly he doesn’t want to encourage it. Here, in my self-imposed isolation in East Anglia, I’ve seen exactly to the contrary. Walking in the local countryside, I pass farms with roadside stalls. They sell locally produced eggs, locally produced fruit and veg and even offer locally grown flowers as well. The village pub – turned into a community shop due to it being unable to sell booze in its normal manner – now sells locally produced pies and locally made ale even (at a most reasonable just £2 to fill a bring-your-own bottle) to takeaway and frankly, it’s all for the good. People are eating more healthily here now and surprisingly these goods are being sold at a lower cost than they’re retailed for by the greedy middlemen – AKA the supermarkets – in normal times.

Growing local is good for the local economy and buying local is even better. Supporting your local food and drink producers is a jolly good thing and Daniel Hannan is dumb to say otherwise.

Since she cannot be physically found, alleged madam and daughter of ‘Bouncing Bob’ Ghislaine Maxwell has now been served by email

As lawyers for Annie Farmer, a woman who accuses Jeffrey Epstein of sexual assault, have been unable to physically locate Ghislaine Maxwell, they have now managed to persuade a judge to allow them to serve the alleged procurer of girls by email.

Last week according to the New York Post, in a most unusual step, Judge Debra Freeman acknowledged that Farmer has “adequately demonstrated that personal service would be impractical” and now Maxwell has  been given until 6th March to respond. If she does not, a default judgment will be placed against her.

At least one other civil suit also looms for Maxwell in a federal court in Manhattan, but once again we join those asking: “Where is this murky madam?” It is indeed time that this rat came out of her hole and it is time Prince Andrew also travelled to America to answer some questions also.

Kestrels are amongst those that make Wilton Castle-on-the-Wye their home

Subsequently abandoned until 1731, when bought by the trustees of Guy’s Hospital, the castle was bought by the legendary retail and property magnate Sir Charles Clore (1904 – 1979) in 1961 and then restored from 2002 onwards. It includes elements of architecture from the Norman, Tudor, Elizabethan, Georgian and Victorian periods and is Grade I listed Scheduled Ancient Monument.

Standing in 2 acres of gardens, primarily within the rampart walls themselves, the castle house comprises of 4 reception rooms, a galleried former chapel, 2 kitchens, 5 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms. There are three original towers (out of the five originally built inside a now dry moat) and whilst two are already back in use, the third, ‘The Great Tower’ could potentially be converted to provide 3 bedroom suites, a new glass entrance and a drawbridge.

In March, of his eccentric home, current owner Alan Parslow told the Evening Standard: “It was a bit of a wreck when we bought it, but after ten years of restorations it’s a lovely family home. We’ve loved living here. It’s a delight to wake up to, surrounded by history”.

Of the future, Parslow added: “We haven’t enough money or time to do The Great Tower up so we’d like to pass it on to someone else”.

Previously, his wife, Sue, was interviewed by The Ross Gazette about the sale. She remarked: “It is quite different from other ruined castles as it is really a garden around a castle”.

Wilton Castle-on-the-Wye is on the market through Jackson-Stops & Staff. The title ‘Lord of Wilton Castle’ is available by separate negotiation.

Namesake Wilton Castle, Bree, Enniscorthy, County Wexford, Ireland has similarities in that it is also part-home, part-ruin

Curiously, an unconnected Irish castle of the same name, Wilton Castle in County Wexford has had a similarly chequered history. Built first in 1247, expanded into a mansion in 1847 and burnt to the ground in 1923, this vast landmark has, like its Ross-on-Wye namesake been subject of a major renovation project since 2004 by its owners, farmers Seán and Antoinette Windsor.

  • A Homely Castle

    A Homely Castle

Britain’s smallest castle is for sale; it comes with 10 acres, a 44 million gallon moat and a narrow boat

Last marketed in 2003 for £1 million (the equivalent of £1.45 million, $1.86 million, €1.73 million or درهم6.83 million today), what is allegedly Britain’s smallest castle is back for sale for the slightly higher sum of £1.75 million ($2.24 million, €2.09 million or درهم8.24 million).

Offered by Belgravia based Henry & James, Starborough Castle is situated on the border of Kent and Surrey and stands in 10 acres of moated gardens and grounds. It is listed Grade II* and also as a scheduled ancient monument.

Dating to around 1754 and constructed on the site of a medieval house built circa 1341, the current dressed stone Neo-Gothic building on the site was restored by a farmer in the 1980s. He sold it to a purveyor of antique maps named Warwick Leadlay (1929 – 2013) in 1995 and in the years since, the grounds were landscaped and outbuildings and a cottage added.

Used by the Leadley family to host a “Glyndebourne of jazz-style” festival and more recently available for both short and long-term lets, Starborough Castle itself currently provides a total of 1,959 square foot of accommodation. There is a mini great hall, minstrel gallery kitchen, two double bedrooms and a bathroom in the main house and a detached one bedroom cottage offers further space for guests.

Of the pint-sized property, James Bailey of Henry & James told the Mail Online:

“It’s an amazing property, a complete one off, and a house of historical importance. The first recorded settlement was there in AD490. The moat was created around the medieval castle that occupied the entire island in the 1300s. That was torn down under Cromwell’s orders in the 1600s”.

“What is there now takes up just a small part of the island, it was built as a summerhouse and you could argue over whether it’s a folly or a castle”.

“It would be a perfect weekend destination place for a professional couple or an individual looking for something unique. The current owners have had it about 20 years and that’s what they have used it for, but they are based in London again now so don’t get to use it much”.

“They also put a barge on the moat to provide extra guest space. It’s a bit of fun, obviously you could only drive it in a circle round the moat, you can’t go anywhere”.
