    An Arab sat outside a shisha café on Brompton Road told her friend: “I lost my phone in Harrods today but I went back and they’d found it. Thank God it was Harrods. They’d have been so racist anywhere else but Harrods, they love us. In this country, it’s whites first and us second but in Harrods, it’s the other way round.”

     

    Lunching (Un)like Liz

    At Granger in Chelsea, a Hill House mother chatted with another of her number. She stated: “I go to lunch at 4.30pm as I don’t do breakfast or dinner. You know why: I don’t want to end up looking like Liz Hurley, do I?”

     

    Standard Death

    A pair of Russian women lunched at Chiltern Firehouse. One announced: “I went to a really f***ing budget wedding recently… One thing that is so important is alcohol but these people served Russian Standard. Social death. It’s like doing something in Shoreditch.”

     

    Priestly Observations

    Two Brompton Oratory priests lunching at Colbert on Sloane Square chatted with a fellow diner about the locality. “It’s changed very much lately,” said one. The other added: “I preferred it when there were more ladies like Miss Marple.”

    Take Me To The Titanic

    Apartment in mansion block in Sloane Square for sale for £6.2 million in spite of needing updating; it is within the building from which a Mayor of Chelsea lived and departed to his death on RMS Titanic

     

    A third floor flat in a portered mansion block on Sloane Square has gone on sale for £6.2 million ($8 million, €7.3 million or درهم29.5 million) through Cluttons in spite of being decorated like a relic from the 1980s. It is situated above Hugo Boss’ flagship store and within Grade II listed Wyndham House, the building from which a former Mayor of Chelsea went to his untimely death aboard the RMS Titanic in 1912.

     

    Previously priced at £6.5 million ($8.4 million, €7.7 million or درهم30.9 million) when marketed by Russell & Simpson in February 2016, the 2,684 square foot lateral apartment includes a 30-foot long reception room, 3 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms and features such details as ornate ceiling friezes and plasterwork and working fireplaces. A larger 5 bedroom flat within Wyndham House sold for the staggering sum of £12 million ($15.5 million, €14.2 million or درهم57 million) in July 2015 according to Land Registry records.

    Aside from being one of Chelsea’s grandest residential blocks, Wyndham House was at home to one of the victims of the Titanic maritime disaster in the early 1900s and it was from here that Charles Head, Mayor of Chelsea between 1909 and 1911, went to his death in April 1912. Head, a Cambridge educated barrister turned director of Head & Co. insurance brokers and underwriters at Lloyds of London, was a well known supporter of the arts, a councilor from 1906 and had only married 18 months earlier. He travelled alone on a £42 first class ticket (the equivalent of £4,400, $5,700, €5,200 or درهم20,900 today) on the Titanic’s maiden voyage and bizarrely had taken out a £25,000 insurance policy “against ocean accidents”. His precaution left his widow very well provided for given such a sum was the equivalent of £2.6 million today ($3.4 million, €3.1 million or درهم12.4 million).

    The Community Conundrum

    Chelsea locals bemoan the loss of their community gathering point

     

    Last night at The Enterprise in Walton Street, a group of bereft locals gathered to hold a wake in honour of the demise of their favoured meeting spot, La Brasserie.

     

    No one present denied the fact that there are plenty of other bars and restaurants where one can go for a drink, but what all agreed was that they had lost was the community spirit of what was literally their “spiritual home”. What they had taken from them was a place where one could walk in happy or sad and find a friendly face and someone to chat to.

     

    Bars like, for example, those at The Botanist and Colbert are perfect for tourists and business assignations, but given their crowded nature and design, they don’t have the ambience that made La Brasserie the perfect meeting spot for friendly banter. It will be missed and now the question on everyone’s lips is this: “Where will Chelsea’s answers to Cheers go next?”

    To complete whatever I begin. At the moment, I’m focusing on launching my current novel The Silent Village in the UK and completing my next novel. Writing seems to engulf me so finding a balance between my working life and my personal life is vital.

     

    “Don’t get even, get medieval” is, in our humble opinion, a great motto. What’s yours?

    “If you can’t say something nice don’t say anything at all” However, I sometimes slip up.

    Charles Cadogn Earl CadognThis thrice married aristocrat and landowner allegedly once said that he prefers the company of horses to people. After dining in a Sloane Square restaurant that served food that wasn’t to his liking, Earl Cadogan – a first cousin of the Aga Khan – revoked their lease in 2010 and also tried to give his second wife a property named the Witch’s Cottage when they divorced. Worth around £3 billion, this Old Etonian went to court in 2002 in support of the defence of the provision of housing for the working classes on his Chelsea estate. A man who doesn’t mince his words.
