At the Liberal Democrat conference on Monday, Vince Cable complained that the Conservatives are “like UKIP without the beer” whilst Guido Fawkes shared pictures of delegates sleeping. With her late husband, Lady Wolfson was and remains as one of the UK’s leading philanthropists. The Lord Leonard and Lady Estelle Wolfson Foundation provides around £35 million per year “to support scientific and medical research, education and the arts” and this fellow of Emmanuel College, Cambridge; King’s College, London; University College, London; the Ashmolean, Oxford; Imperial College, London and the Royal Albert Hall is also a patron of the Royal College of Surgeons; a member of the Lord Major’s Appeal committee, a member of the Red Cross International & Scientific committee, the chair of the committee for Great Ormond Street Children’s Hospital; a yeoman of the Worshipful Company of Apothecaries; a member of the Campaign for Institute of Physics and honorary president of Hadassah Hospital in Jerusalem. How on earth does this stoic and generous lady find the time? -

Doris Thompson MBE OBE (1903 – 2004) and Geoffrey Thompson (1936 – 2004)
This mother and son duo were the stalwarts that built Britain’s most popular seaside attraction, the 40-acre Blackpool Pleasure Beach. Fairgrounds were their life and even at 95, Malvern Ladies’ College educated Doris Thompson MBE OBE was the first to ride her park’s 100mph Playstation ride. After getting off, she gamely stated: “That’s the closest I’ve been to heaven so far”. Shrewsbury and Christ’s College, Cambridge educated Geoffrey Thompson (AKA “Mr Funshine”), aged just 67, sadly predeceased his 101-year old mother by 11 days.
