  • John Armstrong

    John Armstrong

CVB0081O_02.tifThis poet and artist was born in Consett, County Durham and began writing aged just 13 during his time studying at a monastery in Shropshire. Famed for his amazing head of a hair and a regular at the Chelsea Arts Club, amongst Armstrong’s most poignant verses is one from his poem Who Am I in which he states: “I am the thin red line that will not yield, I am that far off corner of a foreign field, I am an Englishman!”

Jean Barker, Baroness Trumpington DCVO, PC

Baroness Trumpington 550“If you want news, listen to the radio; if you want sex, read the newspapers” is amongst the many classic quotes from this Conservative peer. A land girl, a Bletchley Park codebreaker, Mayor of Cambridge, an agriculture minister, and now a Baroness, Trumpington famously stuck two fingers up at Lord King of Bridgwater after he called her “pretty old” during a debate. Of the reaction to that, she commented: “It was entirely between him and me – I thought. I wasn’t conscious of there being television [cameras there]… His family says he is famous now”. Of getting older, she added: “Other people’s opinions matter less – unless they’re medical”. On Desert Island Discs in 1990 she chose the Crown Jewels as her luxury item as she said it would maximise her chances of being rescued. A most practical lady and a true national treasure.

“The increasing sense that time is speeding up”.

“Don’t get even, get medieval” is, in our humble opinion, a great motto. What’s yours?

“Fearless for Your Love Forever!” – I inscribed it into the surface of a recent artwork that appears in my latest exhibition. It may be the first truly heartfelt line I’ve written in months and stands as a declaration to succeed despite all odds. That and a quote from Albert Finney’s character in Saturday Night Sunday Morning… “Don’t let the bastards grind you down!” – I like that one.

    The Bouquet of Christie's

The Bouquet of Christie'sAlways dressed to the nines and a prominent feature at Christie’s auction receptions, this lady plainly loves a perm as much as she likes antiques and fine art. She’d most definitely make a perfect body double for Hyacinth Bucket and Baroness Thatcher would, without doubt, have been green with envy over her collection of handbags.
