Grade I listed Queen Anne manor house in Bedfordshire for sale for a sum 41% lower than it was offered for in 2016

Built between 1710 and 1714 and much enlarged between 1859 and 1860, Hinwick House, near Wellingborough in Bedfordshire was described as a “celebration of Britishness” by The Telegraph in 2017. Its original inspiration was said to be Buckingham House – today known as Buckingham Palace.

 

Grade I listed and extending to 52,660 square foot including ancillary accommodation and outbuildings, this Queen Anne house has 5 reception rooms, 12 bedrooms and 6 bathrooms. It comes with an 18^th century clock tower, a dovecote, 4 staff flats, 3 cottages and for drinkers there are 3 bars even.

 

Constructed primarily of coarsed Ketton and Weldon limestone rubble with ashlar dressings, architectural details include Doric and Corinthian pilasters, balustraded parapets and a bas relief of Diana, wife of Richard Orlebar. The Victorian wing was designed by F. C. Penrose in 1860 and the “fine” interior includes a “magnificent” staircase by Daniel Wyman and plasterwork by John Woolston.

 

Renovated by businessman Sam Singh and his wife after they purchased the compact estate in 2014, the property has been used in the time since as both a family home and rented for parties, conferences and weddings. Guests have variously reportedly included Boris Johnson and there are rumours that the ghosts of four murdered soldiers buried under the building haunt the house.

 

Hinwick House – which is about an hour and a half’s drive from central London – stands in 37 acres of land that consists of formal gardens, a Georgian walled garden, an orchard, a deer park and a paddock. There are two lakes, a stream and areas of woodland also.

Striking Grade II* listed Georgian manor house that was the premises of a renowned antiques dealer for 130 years and the setting for ‘Kavangah QC’ for sale for less than a price of a studio flat in SW3

For sale for £20,000 ($26,000, €23,000 or درهم94,000) less than a poky 409 square foot studio flat in Cadogan Gardens, Chelsea with just 23 years left on its lease, a Grade II* listed Georgian manor house in Hertfordshire that was the premises of Phillips of Hitchin from 1884 until 2015 is for sale.

Extending to over 2,165 square foot and coming with a graveled courtyard parking area, the terraced property has planning permission to convert from commercial to residential usage. Named ‘The Manor House’ or more simply ’26 Bancroft,’ the building is situated in the heart of the town and is being marketed as “having a wealth of potential for redevelopment.”

 

Consisting currently of one large ‘grand hall’ on the ground floor that is 31-feet by 30-foot in dimension, a basement and a first floor with a galleried area and two rooms, plans drawn indicate the potential for an open plan ground floor and two bedrooms suites above. Strangely, given from the external photograph there are clearly two dormer windows on the second floor, no mention of what is up there is made in the marketing brochure.

 

What makes the property most attractive, however, are its grand features. A sweeping staircase is the most impressive, but there are also carved fireplaces, original sash windows and cornices and an oak front door described as “beautiful.”

 

Prior to closing the shop at the age of 75 in 2014, Jerome Phillips – the third generation of his family to run the antiques dealership – told The Comet:

“Having been in Hitchin for more than 100 years there is a pang of regret. We are closing because the next generation of the family will not be running it. It’s a pity but you can’t go on forever, you have to look forward to the next chapter.”

“I studied History at Oxford University when I was younger and I am already looking into doing a postgraduate degree. I would say I am young at heart.”

“We have tremendous memories. The first piece I ever bought was a wardrobe which turned into a bed – it was purchased by an American University. We also sold a mirror by a polar explorer to the office of the then Australian Prime Minister Bob Hawke, so it is nice to think it’s still somewhere in Canberra.”

Used also as a location for the filming of Kavanagh QC – starring the late John Thaw – of that Mr. Phillips added: “It was funny because when the cast had a teabreak they were all sitting around dressed as judges! I spoke to John T haw. Everyone said he was a bit grumpy but I found him to be a perfectly pleasant chap.”

Elsewhere, the University of Leeds, has a page devoted to the business. On it they refer to the company’s founder, Frederick Phillips (1856 – 1910), as a “celebrated antiquary and naturalist.” They added:

“During the late 19th and early 20th centuries the business had over 80 rooms of antique furniture and other objects and was also involved in the reproduction of historic wallpapers and textiles, as well as the construction of ‘ancient’ houses – mostly famously at Bailiffs Court, Sussex, constructed for Lord Moyne in 1927 using a variety of genuine medieval architectural fragments and fittings. Phillips was well-known for producing catalogues and brochures of their stock from the 1880s onwards. Their client lists reads like a who’s-who of major collectors and museums, including the Victoria & Albert Museum, The Metropolitan Museum, New York, and Temple Newsam House, Leeds.”

“Baronial” bachelor pad-esque Manhattan loft that belonged to the late Picasso biographer Sir John Richardson for sale

Variously described as “erudite,” “witty” and the “definitive Picasso biographer,” Stowe educated art historian Sir John Richardson‘s Manhattan loft is for sale following his death in March at the grand old age of 95.

 

Featuring “chaotic décor,” the apartment offered is situated within an 11-storey, 17 unit cooperative designed by Samuel Sass and built in 1906. The upper floors of the building were subsequently converted to residential usage in 1996 by  Joseph Pell Lombardi Architects.

 

Situated at 73 5^th Avenue – and known as ‘The Kensington’ – the ex-New York Times real estate writer Carter Horsley lauds the limestone clad building as “very handsome” and “elegant” whilst in 2014, of Richardson’s loft itself, New York magazine’s Wendy Goodman remarked: [It] feels more like part of a vast English country house [than a New York flat]… A mash-up of exotic and classical furniture.”

 

Laid out presently to reflect the fact that it was the bachelor pad of a single gentleman – Richardson split up with his “mentor” and “very [like a] toad in a relatively small pool” lover, fellow art historian Douglas Cooper in 1960 – rather than a family home, the 5,400 square foot space features just 2 bedrooms rather than the 5 or 6 you’d find in other apartments in the building. It has 30 oversized windows, “soaring ceiling heights,” dark wooden floors and mahogany doorways crowned with neoclassical pediments.

 

London born Richardson moved into the “raw space” that had previously been a dance studio in 1995 and in 2014 remarked of it: “This is my little world… I used to go out like crazy. I don’t go out very much anymore.” He plainly lived life to the full there and was awarded a KBE in the 2012 New Year Honours for his services to art.

 

Agents Compass seek £5.6 million ($7.2 million, €6.5 million or درهم26.4 million) for the loft and sum it up as a place “where some of the most famous artists, writers, and society figures of the late 20th and early 21st century lived, laughed and loved.”

Vast Italian Renaissance style mansion in Cincinnati, Ohio for sale for less than £500,000; it was built for a clockmaker, home to Burt Reynolds’ first wife’s lawyer and more recently a convicted sexual offender

Built in 1908 from Indiana limestone with an overhanging roof of red tiles and grilled windows, the ‘Herschede Mansion’ in North Avondale, Cincinnati was designed by the architect Samuel S. Godley (1858 – 1941) and constructed by James Griffith & Sons Company.

 

Named after the  wealthy jeweler and clockmaker, Frank J. Herschede who commissioned it, the vast 8,502 square, three storey house is described as being a “unique mixture of [the] Greek Revival and Italian Renaissance Revival” styles and is also noted for its “intricately carved mahogany interior.”

 

Later used as a funeral hall and in the early 1980s as the offices and residence of a lawyer named Phil Pitzer – who represented Burt Reynolds’ first wife, the actress Judy Carne, during her trial for possessing heroin – ‘3886 Reading Road’ (as it is more simply known) was purchased by a car salesman named Dale C. Schlanser and his wife Emma in 1986.

 

After his wife died circa 2010, Mr. Schlasner placed the house for sale for the plainly ambitious sum of £735,000. Later, in March 2014 after reducing the price to just £424,000, he told the Cincinnati Enquirer’s Brent Coleman:

 

“I used drive by [the ‘Herschede Mansion’] on my way to work. Jeez, I thought, it looks like the French Embassy… I told my wife that the house is so beautiful inside and in such good repair. Let’s buy it. We moved here in 1986 and I’ve been here ever since.”

 

In June 2014, the house finally sold for £331,000 and in the time since it appears that a man named  Ian D. Reynolds – an individual convicted of assault in the second degree with a sexual motivation in the state of Washington in 2006 – has been amongst the listed occupants. In November 2014, Reynolds attempted to remove his sexual predator classification in the Ohio First District Court of Appeals and failed. It is not known where this predator currently lives.

 

Now, after plainly being lavishly refurbished, in November 2018, the 7 reception rooms 7 bedrooms, 5 bathroom mansion is for sale again. This time offered by Adam Sanregret of agents Coldwell Banker West Shell, the detached house is described as being in a “thriving and redeveloping” neighbourhood and featuring “elegant old world craftmanship.”

 

The ‘Herschede Mansion’ is priced at £466,000, stands on a plot of 0.72 acres and comes with a five car garage with chauffeur’s quarters above.

1979 – Sold to defense attorney Phil Pitzer according to Cincinnati Magazine and described as providing a “perfect backdrop for all the beautiful artifacts and furnishings he has collected.” In addition to living there, Pitzer and his partners used the building as their offices. Pitzer’s most famous case was that of the English actress Judy Carne (1939 – 2015), a woman best known for her marriage to Burt Reynolds and for the phrase of “Sock it to me!” in the NBC sketch comedy Rowan & Martin’s Laugh-In.

 

1908 – Built for Franz J. ‘Frank’ Herschede (1857 – 1922) and his wife Lisette ‘Sadie’ Rattermann (1855 – 1950) as a home for themselves and their eight children. Mr. Herschede began his career as an apprentice watch and clock repairman and had founded the Herschede Hall Clock Company in 1902 (the firm ultimately ceased to operate in 1967).

Vast Georgian mansion close to the East Sussex coast with garaging for nineteen cars for sale for just under £10 million

Built for a Rye based attorney and banker named Jeremiah Curteis (1735 – 1806) between 1798 and 1806 and altered in 1903 by Sir Reginald Blomfield (1856 – 1942) – best known for his work on Chequers between 1909 and 1912 – Leasam House at Playden in East Sussex is described as a “fine mansion” by British Listed Buildings.

 

Home to Sir George and Lady Warrender in the early 1900s, the Grade II listed building subsequently became the Leasam House School between 1956 to 1992 before being returned to use as a private residence in more recent years.

 

Consisting a total of 18,733 square foot of accommodation and 7 reception rooms, 11 bedrooms and 11 bathrooms in the three storey main residence, Leasam House also comes with a 3,592 square ancillary residence named Leasam Grange. Additional features number both a family and catering kitchens, a 10 seat cinema room, a gym and a steam room.

‘Georgian Regency’ country house to rent for £20,000 per month in a Buckinghamshire village voted ‘the best in England’

Built circa 1810 on the site of a medieval manor house where Oliver Cromwell allegedly stayed in 1642, ‘The Stone’ at Pheasant Hill, Chalfont St. Giles in Buckinghamshire is a classically proportioned three bay, yellow stock brick country house.

 

Dominated by a central Doric porch and of three bays, this Grade II listed, 10,025 square house features accommodation over four floors that includes 6 reception rooms, 7 bedrooms and 6 bathrooms. It has a Marston and Laringer orangery, a professional state of the art 4K 3D ‘viewing theatre,’ two wine stores and two kitchens that would make Marco Pierre White jealous even.

Range Rover ‘coffin car’ limousine originally used by the sex mad Prince Jefri Bolkiah of Brunei for sale for 94% less than its original £323,000 total cost

As we’ve reported before, Jefri Bolkiah – the Sultan of Brunei’s black sheep of the family brother – is best known for having had a total of five wives and eighteen children. He likes sexually graphic statues and spending money in a fashion that makes Elton John look modest and now an example of his extravagance is about to be auctioned.

 

Offered for just £18,000 to £24,000 – less than one tenth of the supposed £165,000 (or the equivalent of £323,000 today ) it originally cost to buy and stretch from a 1994 Range Rover Classic LSE into a lengthy limousine – the vehicle to be sold took some nine months for Townley Cross Country Vehicles to convert at the behest of the Sultan for his ‘Playboy Prince’ sibling.

 

Previously offered at auction by H&H Classics in March 2007 for £24,000 to £28,000 and sold by Bonhams to a Danish buyer for just £8,280 in April 2014, the lavish right-hand-drive limousine is described in the Silverstone Auctions catalogue for their NEC Classic Motor Show 2019 sale as being:

 

“Based on an end-of-the-line, soft-dash 1994 Range Rover Classic LSE… Townley stretched the chassis and body by 40″, incorporating two additional fixed Range Rover doors in the centre and a roof raised by 8″. They also installed a laminated sunroof together with darkened windows and a one-piece opening tailgate. Interior features include a full electric centre division with glass panel; three rear seats (two electrically operated); full air conditioning; stereo/CD player and two remote control 8″ television monitors with a VHS recorder. The exterior was painted in Rolls-Royce Mason Black and the interior trimmed in black-piped Oxblood Connolly hide with Wilton carpeting and Burr Walnut embellishments.”

 

Little used by the royal himself it seems, the Range Rover – registration L23 PWT – subsequently transported Mike Tyson around Scotland when he fought Lou Savarese at Hampden Park, near Glasgow in June 2000 and was then sold for £40,000 by a local dealer in August 2015, according to a lengthy article published about the car in Land Rover Magazine.

 

Silverstone Auctions will sell the “sexually charged” 4.2-litre ex-Prince Jefri of Brunei 1994 Range Rover LSE limousine at 2pm on Saturday 9th November. One can only imagine what sort of debauched antics will go on in the back of it during its next chapter, though the auctioneers more innocently simply suggest it to be perfect for simply “taking your extended family out to lunch.”

April 2014 – Sold by Bonhams at the RAF Museum, Hendon for £8,280 ($10,606, €8,608 or درهم38,951). At this time, the auctioneers noted the car as having an expired MOT and that: “The brakes will require attention.”

 

March 2007 – Offered for sale by H&H Classics with an estimate of £24,000 to £28,000 ($23,100 to $35,900, €20,900 to €32,500 or درهم84,700 to درهم131,800). At this time, it was described as being in “A1+ condition.”

 

June 2000 – Sold by Waterside Classics of Glasgow for £40,160 ($51,457, €46,607 or درهم188,979) to someone named Tom Shanks from Stonehaven.

 

1994 – Cost of conversion by Townley Cross Country Vehicles reported to be circa £135,000 ($173,000, €156,600 or درهم635,200) or the equivalent of £264,000 today ($338,000, €306,000 or درهم1.2 million).

 

1994 – Approximate cost of a standard 1994 Land Rover Range Rover 4.2-litre LSE was circa £30,000 ($38,400, €34,800 or درهم141,000) or the equivalent of £59,000 today ($75,600, €68,500 or درهم277,700) according to the FT’s ‘How To Spend It.’

‘Baroness Thrifty’ puts her Sir John Soane designed Norfolk mansion up for sale for 46% less than she tried to get for it in 2011 (when Johnny Depp allegedly failed to purchase it)

Minus about 8 acres of land and its coach house and gate lodge, a Georgian country house in a village known as “Chelsea-on-Sea” is back on the market at a knockdown price of £3.8 million today.

 

Grade II* listed Burnham Westgate Hall at Burnham Market in Norfolk –  a village acclaimed for its pub, The Hoste (a favourite of Stephen Fry, Amanda Holden and Prince William amongst others and itself sold for £8.65 million earlier this year) – was put up for sale in 2011 for £7 million, but failed to sell.

 

Now, its owner, after a dispute with her former partner and a sale of its contents in September by auctioneers Sworders, Conservative Party politician Baroness Rawlings – a woman best known as ‘Baroness Thrifty’ due to her frequently offering advice on “how to live on a budget in a stately home” – has cleared it out and is again looking to offload it.

 

Described now as a 15 bedroom house with 12 bathrooms in “parkland of over 30 acres,” Burnham Westgate Hall was built in the 1720s and remodeled in 1780 by Sir John Soane for Thomas Pitt, 1^st Lord Camelford. Its most impressive feature, Penny Churchill of Country Life noted in 2011, is “a split, cantilevered staircase and a first-floor piano nobile” and of purchasing the 15,870 square foot building in 1991, in 2013, Lady Rawlings told The New York Times:

 

“We were living in nearby Brancaster at the time and had been passing by for years and years, thinking how lovely it was and how wonderful it would be to live there. It was a beautiful house and in such a peaceful location. “Structurally, the house was in very good condition when we bought it; it had been well maintained,” she said. “We opened up fireplaces and stripped floors. But it is impossible to put a figure on what we have spent over the years.”

 

Agents Sowerbys describe the house as “important architecturally” and add that “contrary to popular belief, Norfolk is not flat, as suggested by Noël Coward.”

An analysis of the results at the 2019 RM Sotheby’s London sale

Brexit uncertainty did not stop their being a large turnout for the preview of the 2019 RM Sotheby’s London sale at Olympia on Thursday night.

The sale itself on Friday evening included 98 lots and despite the fact that 27 (28%) did not sell, the majority sold at or around their lower reserves. Of the six cars in the star £1 million plus range ($1.3 million, €1.2 million or درهم4.7 million), however, only one sold, but this lot – a ‘barn find’ 1969 Lamborghini Miura P400 S – did achieve significantly much more than its £800,000 to £1 million ($1 million to $1.3 million, €926,000 to €1.2 million or درهم3.8 million to درهم4.7 million) estimate and went for £1.248 million ($1.600 million, €1.445 million or درهم5.879 million).

Another achiever was something much smaller, a 1985 Porsche 936. Offered without reserve an estimate of just £4,000 to £8,000 ($5,100 to $10,200, €4,600 to €9,300 or درهم18,800 to درهم37,700), this ultimate 1:2 scale children’s car with the livery of Jacky Ickx and Derek Bell’s 24 Hours of Le Mans 1981 winner went for a staggering £13,800 ($17,700, €16,000 or درهم65,000).

Other notable lots included a 1984 Daimler Double Six long-wheelbase saloon that was supplied new for the personal use of Her Majesty The Queen. Featuring a full-length rear cushion specially made for the comfort of three corgis, the car also includes a blue convoy light and special flashing fog lights for security, the vehicle smashed its lower reserve of £50,000 ($64,000, €58,000 or درهم236,000) and went for £80,500 ($103,000, €93,000 or درهم379,000).

A 1943 White M16 MGMC Half-Track that one could imagine a megalomaniac cruising country lanes in imaging themselves as a dictator, however, did not come close to its upper estimate of £120,000 ($154,000, €139,000 or درهم565,000).
