This Carlisle born author, broadcaster and columnist loathes Hyde Park’s Winter Wonderland but loves Tartufo in Cadogan Gardens, SW3. Dent’s witty weekly Evening Standard column ‘Grace and Flavour’ is a must read as her acerbic commentaries about London’s best and worst eating spots are just brilliant. She has nearly 200,000 followers on Twitter and has also written eleven novels.

Jean Barker, Baroness Trumpington DCVO, PC
“If you want news, listen to the radio; if you want sex, read the newspapers” is amongst the many classic quotes from this Conservative peer. A land girl, a Bletchley Park codebreaker, Mayor of Cambridge, an agriculture minister, and now a Baroness, Trumpington famously stuck two fingers up at Lord King of Bridgwater after he called her “pretty old” during a debate. Of the reaction to that, she commented: “It was entirely between him and me – I thought. I wasn’t conscious of there being television [cameras there]… His family says he is famous now”. Of getting older, she added: “Other people’s opinions matter less – unless they’re medical”. On Desert Island Discs in 1990 she chose the Crown Jewels as her luxury item as she said it would maximise her chances of being rescued. A most practical lady and a true national treasure. -

Annabel Giles
On her website, Giles describes herself as a “model, TV and radio presenter, actress and comedienne, novelist and journalist…” Is there anything this ex-wife of Midge Ure of Ultravox does not do? On her blog: “When 140 characters just isn’t enough…” she tells David Cameron: “I’m not into politics, I’m into people” and states that “celebrities have feelings too, even if they can’t show them.” This former game show panelist plainly still considers herself still to be one. We’re not so sure and though she tells us on her Twitter handle that she’s “NOT Lara Croft,” we really don’t have a clue as to what she really is. -

John Simpson CBE
A Chelsea resident who travels the globe reporting from all manner of war zones. He’s avoided bullets in Tiananmen Square and was punched in the stomach by Harold Wilson on his first day working at the BBC. He freely admits to having had tried hallucinogenic drugs. One resulting hallucination consisted of a 6ft goldfish in dark glasses and a straw hat wrapping itself around his shoulders. At any party, he’s naturally the man guests flock to. -

Damian Lewis
Old Etonian whose performance as U.S. Marine Sergeant Nicholas Brody in Homeland has charmed even President Obama. Married to actress Helen McCrory, he’s also played Jeffrey Archer and been a host of the BBC’s Have I Got News For You. Through his passion for Liverpool Football Club, he convinced Kenny Dalglish to get involved in Ellen Perry’s 2011 film Will. -
