    The Bubble is Back

New electric Swiss ‘bubble car’ expected to launch in December; 7,200 orders have already been placed for the £10,800 Microlino

The Swiss are known for their chocolate and cuckoo clocks but now they might add something new to their roster: cars.

Expected to launch in December and limited at first to the Swiss market, the two-seat, electric Microlino is a quadricycle vehicle that pays homage to the design of the BMW Isetta ‘bubble car’.

With a supposed 7,200 orders placed already, the Microlino has a top speed of 56 miles per hour and a range of 75 miles. It can be charged using a domestic power socket in four hours and will be manufactured by the Italian company Tazzari EV.

Described as priced “less than a car, but a bit more than a motorbike,” the surprisingly spacious Microlino will be sold for £10,800 ($13,700, €12,000 or درهم50,400).

It features an interior personally crafted by Marek Reichman, Aston Martin’s creative officer, that was guided by “Daniel Craig’s preference of denim and dark colours.”

Of selling the 6.0-litre V12 vehicle, Daniel Craig commented:

“This Aston Martin Vanquish is a tour-de-force of automobile engineering and a distinct pleasure to drive. While I will miss it, I am keen to further the very important work of The Opportunity Network with its sale.”

Christie’s will sell the left-hand drive, midnight blue with deep blue interior car on 20th April at their ‘Exceptional Sale’ and offer it with an estimate of £285,000 to £428,000 ($400,000 to $600,000, €322,000 to €483,000 or درهم1.5 million to درهم2.2 million). A 1931 8-litre Bentley Tourer that got the nickname ‘The Harem Saloon’ because it was first used by a Chinese Mau owner to take his girlfriends to the races in Singapore is on sale at a price of £1.15 million ($1.54 million, €1.30 million or درهم5.67 million).

The magnificent machine, which was subsequently kept in a mine during the Second World War and then eventually rebodied as a gentleman’s tourer in 2002, retains its original bonnet and scuttle but has effectively been completely rebuilt.

Described as having “very good long legs on the motorway and also around the country lanes without the need of an overdrive,” the car is said to have “behaved impeccably with no problems” on “numerous trips down to Le Mans” and is now offered by Richard Biddulph of Vintage & Prestige Classic Cars of Grays, Essex.

Six year old Ford to be sold for nearly double its price in 2011; it has just 18 miles on the clock

A zippy 2011 Ford Focus RS with just 18 miles on the clock is to be sold at auction next month for nearly double what it cost new.

The ‘Ultimate Green’ with a green sports fabric interior vehicle – which certainly would even stand out in a Tesco car park – comes with a 2.5-litre, 5-cylinder engine and is capable of 0-60 miles per hour in just 4.7 seconds. It features a front-wheel drivetrain, 19-inch wheels and what are described as “a wing that would embarrass a Porsche Turbo.”

Surprisingly serviced four times despite its low mileage, the Focus is presented in “unwrapped” condition: The radio aerial has never been fitted, the wheel centres have never been put on and the seats still have their delivery plastic covers in place.

Silverstone Auctions have set an estimate of £38,000 to £44,000 ($50,000 to $58,000, €43,000 to €49,000 or درهم186,000 to درهم215,000) and will sell what they call a “remarkable little car” at their NEC Classic Motor Show Sale on 11th and 12th November.

    The Black Prince

“Ultra-rare” 1951 Invicta Black Prince to be auctioned; here is a truly astounding shooting brake complete with an incredible mascot

An ultimate example of 1950s luxury, a 1951 Invicta Black Prince shooting brake with coachwork by Associated Coachbuilders – that cost £3,820 new (the equivalent of £110,000, $142,000, €119,000 or درهم521,000 today) – is to be auctioned in September.

Featuring an all alloy 3.0-litre six-cylinder engine with twin overheard camshafts, twin-plug ignition and triple SU carburetors, this automatic, dark green vehicle is just one of twelve survivors of sixteen cars made. It was actually completed after the Invicta brand ceased to exist in 1950 and finished in Sunderland as ‘MPT 850’ on 3rd November 1951.

Restored and upgraded in the 1980s, the car comes with “a wealth of documentation” and retains its “truly extravagant mascot of the Black Prince himself.”

The shooting brake will be sold by Bonhams at their Beaulieu sale on 2nd September in Hampshire. An estimate of £22,000 to £27,000 ($28,000 to $35,000, €24,000 to €28,000 or درهم104,000 to درهم128,000) has been set.

  • A Con and A Cabriolet

    A Con and A Cabriolet

One-off 1971 Rolls-Royce Phantom VI cabriolet to be auctioned; originally commissioned by a British playboy turned jailbird with connections to Princess Margaret but only actually completed in 1993

A 1971 Rolls-Royce Phantom VI all-weather cabriolet with bodywork by the renowned Italian automotive stylist Frua is to be auctioned this month.

Offered with an estimate of £308,000 to £462,000 ($400,000 to $600,000, €340,000 to €511,000 or درهم1.5 million to درهم2.2 million), this truly unique, one-of-one design was amazingly the final Rolls-Royce Phantom VI completed in spite of the model remaining in production until 1991. This mammoth beast of a car, surprisingly, however, has just 72 miles on its clock and is thus described as “as brand new.”

The car’s first owner, Robert ‘Bobby’ Buchanan-Michaelson, was a bit of a playboy but sadly he never got to actually drive or be driven in it. A “member of Princess Margaret’s inner circle of friends,” this Cambridge graduate was a member of the “Mayfair mammas’ lists of the season’s most eligible bachelors” until “exchanging his Edwardian hacking jacket for prison grey” in 1954 after being jailed for 12 months for an import/export fraud according to a report in Sydney’s World’s News in August that year.

Some years after being freed, ex-con Buchanan-Michaelson took part in the 10,000 mile 1968 London to Sydney Marathon in a Mercedes-Benz 280SE. In a book about the adventure he was described as both a “successful and wealthy businessman, employing a cook, a butler, a maid and a chauffeur” and as an “accomplished sportsman.” Also listed as a lavish spender, Buchannan-Michaelson was later bankrupted in November 1977 – though at the time he lived in grandeur at both at Churchbury Manor at Fairford, Gloucestershire and 26 The Vale, in Chelsea, London, SW3.

In 1970, in the period between the international car race and his bankruptcy, Buchanan-Michaelson commissioned Rolls-Royce to build him a Phantom VI. After delivery to Jack Barclay Ltd. In June 1971, the vehicle’s chassis was sent to Frua of Torino, Italy to have bodywork fitted but for some reason work stopped and it was not until 1977 – and by now with a new American owner, James Leake, and new drawings of its eventual form – that the project continued.

With Pietro Frua (1913 – 1983) retiring soon thereafter and Mr Leake’s death in 1983, the chassis passed to new ownership and it was only eventually completed as a finished motor vehicle in 1993.

That year, the four-door ‘state cabriolet’ was displayed at the Geneva Motor Show and its boxy look must have surely either have wowed or horrified visitors. It is described as having “an elaborate multi-position convertible top allows the car to be configured as a sedanca de ville, landaulet or fully open convertible.” The interior is trimmed in burled walnut with sterling silver inlays and amongst other luxuries are front and rear heating, air-conditioning, fresh-air ventilation systems, a television, a video player, a radio and a cocktail cabinet. Underneath the seats is a portable Davidoff cigar humidor and even a matching silk-lined ladies’ vanity case. What more could anyone ever need?

RM Sotheby’s will sell the Frua Phantom VI at their Monterey sale in California on 19th August and term it: “The last word in modern opulence.”

It has 60,300 miles on the clock and also has air conditioning and a working sunroof.

Used first by the then Princess of Wales on 4th October 1990, the car took her first to a Royal Gala to benefit the London City Ballet at the Department of Commerce in Washington, D.C. and then also to a home for HIV positive children, TERRIFIC, Inc.’s Grandma’s House®, in what was termed an “historic visit.”
