    Speaker Bercow brings shame on himself and Britain through his mendacious ways (yet again) suggests Matthew Steeples

     

    John Bercow could be criticised for marrying a rough bird named Sally (who then had an affair with his very own cousin and flirted outrageously on television with the somewhat strange gypsy Paddy Doherty) but now he’s finally gone too far.

     

    Though Bercow is a Remain supporter and displays a ‘Bollocks to Brexit’ sticker in his somewhat decrepit Land Rover Freelander (something readers would think would make him endear to me), I now call out this dwarf-like rat as the disgrace that he truly is.

     

    In a story in today’s Daily Mail, it is revealed that Speaker Bercow claimed £17,103 in travel expenses in the period between January and September 2018 (on top of all that this deservedly much loathed individual has nabbed in the past).

     

    That a Speaker of the House of Commons even needs to travel beyond the chamber is perplexing but that he even claimed £1,368 to take three people to a funeral of a friend just takes the biscuit. This cretinous creep should be now given a one way ticket. To where I hear you ask? Siberia.

    The world is a poorer place in the wake of Sally Bercow losing the libel action brought against her by Lord McAlpine. Those who know me will know that I don’t especially care for the Speaker’s wife or approve of her behaviour, but nonetheless that “the gift that kept on giving” (as some newspapers have referred to her) has been silenced is indeed a shame.

    This morning a judge at the High Court ruled that Sally Bercow’s tweet last November about Lord McAlpine suggested that he was a “paedophile who was guilty of sexually abusing boys living in care” and therefore libelous.

    Lord McAlpine shares his views on how to deal with the media

     

    In his 1999 book, The New Machiavelli: The Art of Politics in Business, Lord McAlpine, who successfully defeated Sally Bercow in a libel action today stated:

     

    “Another option is for the businessperson to learn the art of dealing with the media, using all the tricks that go with that trade – such as the false defeat: when a person seems to lose, in order to gain public sympathy, or the false triumph: where a person seems to win in order to appear strong – thus giving credibility to any number of dubious propositions that person may wish to make in the future. Neither of these ploys are examples of the use of true facts, rather of false facts given to the media to chew on, much as a dog chews on a bone”.

    Though Sally may be silly, it’s the case against her that is stupid

    The reasoning for Lord McAlpine’s libel action against Sally Bercow just does not stack up

     

    Sally Bercow, the speaker’s wife, is a loudmouth. We don’t dispute that. There’s little she won’t say or do to keep herself in the public eye and whether draped in nothing other than a sheet in the Palace of Westminster or fooling around in the Celebrity Big Brother house, she comes across as a bit of a fool.

     

    The current libel action against Mrs Bercow, though, just doesn’t make sense. It is an overreaction on the part of Lord McAlpine and rather reminds us of the case of Oscar Wilde and the Marquess of Queensberry.

    We at The Steeple Times thought this image of a lady holding up a piece of cardboard summed up the events of the weekend perfectly.

     

    As a debate rages about the future of the BBC and the role of social media in the “outing” of personalities in connection to alleged stories of abuse, the words of George Orwell ring utterly true:

     

    “Journalism is printing what someone else does not want printed. Everything else is public relations.”

     

    For this simple reason, we make it our picture of the week. This scandal should not be brushed under the carpet.
