Famed for his distinctive handlebar moustache and “booming baritone voice” as much as his loathing of the European Union, drugs, pop music, pornography and students, Willesden born Sir Gerald Nabarro was a “hard-right” Conservative Member of Parliament from 1950 until his death in 1973. Eccentric Nabarro’s fleet of luxury cars sported the number plates NAB 1 through to NAB 8 but following his personal belief that a “Conservative candidate’s car should be substantial but not too substantial”, he never owned a Rolls-Royce or Bentley. His personal legacy was to kill London’s “Great Smog” with his Clean Air Act of 1956.
