Jack Vetrianno puts painting on the market (and throws in a flat)
Whoever buys Scottish artist Jack Vettriano OBE’s £2 million flat in Pont Street, Knightsbridge gets not only a one bedroomed flat, but also a painting titled Suddenly Last Summer.
Vettriano, whose most famous painting The Singing Butler is Britain’s best selling image and whose collectors number Sir Alex Ferguson, Sir Tim Rice and Jack Nicholson, painted the image to conceal a door to a boiler cupboard. Of it, he commented:
“To cover up the boiler cupboard I painted directly over the door. It was inspired by a love affair I had with a married woman some time ago”.
The 968 square foot first floor apartment includes a 22 foot by 21 foot reception room where Vettriano’s easel is currently set up. In addition, there is a small kitchen, bathroom, 18 foot bedroom and a balcony with views to St Columba’s Church and Beauchamp Place.
The self-taught artist, born Jack Hoggan, paid £450,000 for the flat in 1998 so, if the flat sells for the asking price set by agents Hobart Slater, “the people’s painter’s” profit will nearly be as good as the increases in value his works have achieved since the Royal Academy rejected The Singing Butler in 1992.
