£45.7 million Virginia estate of the late Paul and Bunny Mellon complete with its own private one-mile long airstrip now available in lots

Standing on some 2,047 acres and featuring a 10,000 square foot neo-Georgian mansion as its main residence, the estate also includes two additional large-scale residences and over twenty cottages. According to the selling agents Washington Fine Properties, there are two stable blocks with 34 stalls, a working dairy, “multiple barns”, shops and “extraordinary gardens and greenhouses”. A 100-acre portion of the property complete with the main home occupied by Mr and Mrs Mellon was separately gifted to the Gerard B. Lambert Foundation, a charity entity established by Mrs Mellon in memory of her father.

 

Acquired first by Paul Mellon in the 1930s from his mother, Oak Spring Farm housed not only various family members but also one of America’s “most notable art collections”. It included everything from Hoppers to Rothkos and sold for £103.5 million ($158.7 million, €140.9 million) last year.
