A fine classical country house

£8 million Morley Hall combines traditional style with a home fit for modern living

Morley Hall is a Georgian country house to the east of Ware in Hertfordshire. This fine residence is worthy of note as it was remodeled in the Palladian style by the renowned classical architect Raymond Erith RA FRIBA (1904 – 1973) in 1955 – 1956.

Grade II listed and dating back originally to the 17th century in parts, Erith’s work on the house is considered exceptional and was one of his first significant country house commissions. He would later work on the redesign of 10 Downing Street and in testament to that, as part of the restoration carried out by the current owners, a copper topped lantern identical to the one above the Prime Minister’s official residence has been installed above the Vitruvian front door.

Downton Abbey and Gosford Park writer Julian Fellowes once stated:

“The English country house is certainly an icon of British culture”.

Morley Hall provides the perfect modern interpretation: Here, you’ve got a classical country house just 25 miles from Central London that’s been adapted for contemporary living. Not only does the 10,442 square foot main residence have 4 principal reception rooms, 8 bedrooms and 4 bathrooms, it also features a cinema with backlit walls painted by the artist for Bladerunner and Star Wars, a 47-foot long function room and a linen oak paneled snooker room.

In addition, there is a 5-bedroomed cottage, described as being suitable for staff or guests, an outdoor swimming pool, an all-weather tennis court and numerous outbuildings including barns, stabling and a 39-foot by 22-foot garage. Planning permission has also been granted for a 3,300 square foot leisure complex.

Though the only limitation we can see is that Morley Hall comes with just 29.8 acres of grounds in total, the setting is superb. Aside from 2 acres of formal gardens, there is parkland, several paddocks and a medieval moated island where a professionally designed tree house – resembling something out of the Lord of the Rings – has been built. It features electric lighting, a water supply and comes with a range of zip wires and rope swings. Harry Potter eat your heart out, selling agents Savills seek £7,950,000.
