Picture of the Week: A picture is worth a thousand words

An image of John Kerry dining with Bashar al-Assad in February 2009 surfaces

John Kerry is a man who should be more careful about who he gets snapped with. As Chamberlain learnt to his peril after visiting Hitler in 1938, it is best not to consort with tyrannical leaders and it is better still not to be photographed with them.

Now, Kerry, remembered for his “fuzziness” on policy during his failed 2004 presidential campaign, finds himself in a similar position to the “peace in our time” Prime Minister after a photograph of him and his wife dining with Bashar al-Assad and his wife has surfaced.

Taken in 2009, the image shows John Kerry, then a Massachusetts senator and his billionairess wife Teresa Heinz at a small table with President Bashar al-Assad and his British born wife, Asma. As the party of four enjoy a meal together, a waiter stands by them with a tray of cocktails and another man in a suit leans in to check all is well.

How times have changed. In recent days, Kerry has likened Assad to Adolf Hitler and Saddam Hussein. He has argued that the “case gets stronger by the day” for a military attack on Syria and called his former dining compatriot a “thug and a murderer”.

Plainly there will be no more baked bean suppers for these two.
