Gaylord Gone

Iconic “Fawlty Towers-esque” Indian restaurant Gaylord in Mortimer Street, W1 permanently closes due to cockroach infestation

After being served with a hygiene emergency prohibition notice in August due to it having a “serious infestation of cockroaches,” the iconic Indian restaurant Gaylord – with a motto of “tradition is always in” – has now sadly permanently closed.

Opened on 18th June 1966, Gaylord was situated in Mortimer Street and was known for serving “good Mughlai curries for more than half a decade” according to the gastronomic bible Harden’s. Others were less charitable and noted it for its “disinterested staff” known for being “on the verge of rude.” On occasion the general manager, Sameer Berry, banned customers and described them as having “bullish attitudes” and “arrogant.”

A new Indian restaurant will open on the site shortly called Banjarah. It is owned by Delhi-based restaurant group Azure Holdings. Whether it will have the same character is to be seen.
