Five of the Best: Hotel bars in New York City

Oliver Estreich selects his five favourite hotel bars in New York

Oliver Estreich, the founder of the well-known social network theNativeSociety, is the man about town to know in New York. Here, he selects five of his favourite hotel bars:

JIMMY at The James, SoHo

Described as “a year-round rooftop experience that embraces all seasons”, this venue “shuns the penchant that rooftop bars are only summertime destinations”. JIMMY is acclaimed for seasonal cocktails based on classic inspirations and was conceived by hospitality veterans Johnny Swet, Larry Poston and David Rabin.

The Regency Bar at the Loews Regency Hotel, Manhattan

The Regency Bar & Grill at the new Loews Regency Hotel was the birthplace of the “Power Breakfast” in 1975. The venue is now managed by famed New York restaurateurs Gherardo Guarducci and Dimitri Pauli of the Sant Ambroeus Hospitality Group and regulars include Larry King and the Reverend Al Sharpton.

Isola at The Mondrian SoHo, Lower Manhattan

With a design inspired by Jean Cocteau’s 1946 film La Belle et la Bête, this indoor-outdoor bar “captures the spirit of the Italian provinces”. Italian classics like the Negroni and Aperol spritz prove popular here and there are over 100 wines by the bottle.

The Crosby Bar, Crosby Street Hotel, SoHo

Owned by the London boutique hotel group Firmdale Hotels, the Crosby Street Hotel has been designed by Kit Kemp. A vast space dominated by an oversized Dodo bird, the bar features African ASAFO flags and a Peter Clarke collage. Cocktails are priced between $16.50 and $25.

The Mark Bar at The Mark Hotel, Manhattan

Chic and lively and designed by Jacques Grange, this is “the chicest meeting spot on Madison Avenue”. Cocktails include a cucumber martini and a lychee raspberry bellini. One of the hotel’s claims to fame is that Johnny Depp and Kate Moss got a little carried away here in 1994. They trashed their room and were promptly arrested.
