A Double Starter

Section:

Rare 1964 Citroën 2CV Sahara 4×4 complete with two starters to be auctioned; it was originally designed to be a “low priced car”  but is now anything but

One of just 694 made and one of around only 27 still in existence, a rare 1964 Citroën 2CV Sahara 4×4 will be sold at auction in California this month.

An example of this iconic French car’s finest variant, the Sahara – a special dual-engine four-wheel-drive – was “built to traverse such regions as the vast tracts of desert that surrounded the French colonies of North Africa” according to auctioneers Gooding & Company.

Featuring two engines, two transmissions and two fuel tanks, the car’s spare wheel was relocated to the bonnet, this extraordinary vehicle is capable of driving at angles of up to 45 degrees. It was sold at twice the price of a standard 2CV.

The Sahara offered did not make it to Africa originally, however, but ended up in Switzerland. The two owner car has covered just under 40,000 miles since new and comes with operating manuals in both French and German.

Offered with an estimate of £74,000 to £99,000 ($90,000 to $120,000, €80,000 to €107,000 or درهم331,000 to درهم441,000) and no reserve, Gooding & Company will sell the car at their 16th and 17th August Pebble Beach 2019 sale in California.

Of it they remark: “[This is an] extremely rare and intact Sahara; a showcase of Citroën’s innovation and engineering genius… The most highly coveted model of the 2CV line… [It] is a perfect conversation starter – with two starters!”

Lauded as a “profoundly honest” and “one of the world’s most famous cars,” the 2CV – Meaning: French: “Deux Cheveaux; English: “Two steam horses” – was designed by an engineer named Pierre-Jules Boulanger (1885 – 1950). He wanted to “create a car that [could] carry four people and 50 kg of potatoes at 60 km/h, while consuming just 3 litres of fuel per 100 km.” Of it, he remarked: “It should be drivable by a woman or by a learner-driver … and don’t worry about how it looks.” He tragically died in a car crash – in a Citroën.

The interior of the car to be sold is certainly somewhat basic.
