The last Classic race of the Flat season

The Tout’s tips for Saturday’s Ladbrokes St Leger

As we enter the autumn it is time for the final classic race of the season on Town Moor at Doncaster. The race used to bear more importance in years past when it was regarded as the final stage of a triple crown. The last horse to achieve that great feat was Oh So Sharp in 1985 with, most recently, Camelot just failing last year. Nowadays horses are not commercially or so specifically bred to get 1¾ miles so staying types are fewer on the ground.

This year’s renewal is wide open with a field that lacks a standout star. Godolphin who have been very successful in past years are throwing three horses at the challenge and Cap O’Rushes is their best prospect who takes on Excess Knowledge who is favourite at this stage but came off second best the last time they ran together.

Mickael Barzalona and Encke won last year’s Ladbrokes St Leger Stakes

The Derby form has not worked out well this year so of the shorter priced horses Gallileo Rock is only a tentative selection and as the race does appear so wide open The Tout favours two outsiders in the shape of Great Hall at 25/1 with Kieren “The Assasin” Fallon on board. Curiously his pedigree does not scream stamina but he is profiling as a stayer and then we have real form in the shape of Talent who won The Oaks and disappointed last time but at 10/1 represents outrageous value as the only classic winner in the field.

Good luck in that last furlong as they will soon be strung out like the washing on a windy day.
