The Steeple Times’ horse racing tips with an analysis of the top tipsters and their selections for the St Leger Festival at Doncaster

Today is a  bumper day of racing and it marks the final Classic of the season, the William Hill St Leger at Doncaster at 3.35pm.

Obvious Option

The obvious option is the Dettori ridden Logician at EVS (Racing Post, Guardian, The Times, Daily Telegraph), though the Racing Post’s Mel Cullinan is favouring the O’Brien-O’Brien combo Sir Dragonet at 9/4. We’re going against their analysis, however, and opting for an each way on Radio 4 and Marcus Townsend of the Daily Mail’s suggestion, the Mark Johnston trained, Donnacha O’Brien ridden Sir Ron Priestley at 10/1.

Of the great Sir Ron, Franny Norton – who has won four times on the horse – told the Daily Mail:

“We know what Logician is bringing to the table but we also know what we’re bringing. If there are any kinks in Logician’s armour, Sir Ron will find them because he is tough and brave. The three that are in front of him in the betting, are they really that bombproof? We will see.”

Darker Horses

Also interesting has to be an each way on:

1.50pm Doncaster – Wentworth Falls at 12/1 (The Times and Radio 4).

Racing Post says: “Beaten 17 times since last win in April 2017 and down the field in a first-time visor at Thirsk 15 days ago, when back from a break; however, he’s finally dropped below his last winning mark and has major claims on this year’s best efforts (including in these cheekpieces), while his course form figures read an eyecatching 14432 (third in this last year off 4lb higher).”
