Today, racing enthusiasts will delight in the feature high-class sprint that is the William Hill Gold Cup at Ayr at 3.50pm. With seven places, there’s plenty to play for, but in such a crowded field where trainers Channon, Dalgleish, Fahey, Hannon, Meehan and Ryan amongst others are battling it out, each way betting is probably the best option.

Each Way Options – William Hill Gold Cup at Ayr, 3.50pm

The favourite is what the Mirror are calling the “Irish raider” Buffer Zone (at 7/2 from 5/1 earlier), but given the Kevin Ryan trained Hey Jonesy has snagged the “lucky eight position,” they are enthusiastic about his chances.

Both the Daily Mail and Sporting Life suggest, however, the NAP horse to be the “on much better form” Summerghand at 10/1 and of his chances the Racing Post adds: “He should be in the thick of it,” but we’re going with Radio 4’s choice, the Fanning-Dalgleish combo Soldier’s Minute, at 18/1 from 20/1 earlier.

Obvious Option

Also interesting to watch at Ayr has to be the 2.40pm where we’d go with a win for the “progressive, has to be feared, has obvious claims” (according to the Racing Post) is the Sir Michael Stoute trained Alkaraama at 7/2. He is also backed by Sporting Life, the Daily Telegraph and the Guardian.

Also present and a horse we’ve come to rather like is Savalas. An each way only in this crowded field at 28/1, of him the Racing Post remark: “Capable.”
