Epsom: The Oaks and the Derby

The Tout’s tips for the Oaks and the Derby

Frederico Tesio, a pre-eminent Italian breeder, who owned and bred Ribot one of the all time greats maintained that there is only one important piece of wood in the world and that piece of wood is the winning post at Epsom on the downs just ten miles south of London.

The Derby and the Oaks are the ultimate test of a three year old thoroughbred as a test of mental and physical aptitude on a racecourse that is the most demanding and different in the world. So no problems here then in picking the winner!

The Tout maintains that stamina is the key here and they have to get home. The standout bet is in the Oaks and that is Secret Gesture who is favourite at 5/2 but should have them all toiling in her wake throughout the final furlong. She won her trial race well on a similar track at Lingfield and her stamina is not in doubt.

For the Derby we have a very short priced favourite in New Approach and The Tout does not think that stamina will be his strongest suit but his quality is not in doubt. The pick is Ocavango trained by the master French trainer Andre Fabre who was successful two years ago with Pour Moi. In a similar fashion he had a spin on the track last week and appeared to relish the undulations of the North Downs track. If you feel adventurous have a forecast with Battle Of Marengo who is also guaranteed to stay and has done little wrong combined with the ownership power of Coolmore and trained by Aiden O’Brien who is in great form.

Be excited as it doesn’t get any better than Derby Day.
