Two ideal bedfellows

George Galloway MP backs Julian Assange

This morning’s The Independent carried the story of Julian Assange’s latest backer, George Galloway MP.

George Galloway MP, British politician, author, journalist, broadcaster and the Respect Member of Parliament for Bradford West

In a video podcast, Galloway suggests that the allegations against Assange should not be considered rape when he states:

“Even taken at its worst, if the allegations made by these two women were true, 100 per cent true, and even if a camera in the room captured them, they don’t constitute rape.”

“Not everybody needs to be asked prior to each insertion. Some people believe that when you go to bed with somebody, take off your clothes, and have sex with them and then fall asleep, you’re already in the sex game with them.”

“It might be really bad manners not to have tapped her on the shoulder and said, “do you mind if I do it again?” It might be really sordid and bad sexual etiquette, but whatever else it is, it is not rape.”

Perhaps Galloway and Assange should get a room. They’re equally well known for the ludicrous statements they come out with so I’m sure they’d appreciate one another’s pillow talk.

  1. I am beginning to feel sorry for Mr Steeples. Unlike Mr Galloway – and my good self – he has not read the evidence, so his uninformed bleatings belie the sub-title of his organ – to wit: Wit and Wisdom in Equal Measure. Very little wit and even less wisdom, recalling the motto of my Alma Mater: Empty barrels make the most noise.

  2. Trust George to provoke everybody! I do love him although not always agreeing with him. Igo Hustay continues with his bellicose style and perhaps a gag might be in order unlike George, who is very bright and a joy to hear. Remember his performance when facing the Yanks’ select committee? Whether you agree or disagree it’s still a good piece of theatre.

  3. Rex: You are quite right. He’s spectacularly intelligent. I just wish he’d put his brain to better use than aligning himself with Mr Assange. It will only backfire.
