Duck famous for being lonely and the only one on the isolated Pacific island of Niue dies

The death of a duck on an isolated island would not normally arouse much interest but ‘Trevor’ – as he became known (in honour of a New Zealand politician named Trevor Mallard) – was one that was considered a “public figure” and had over 2,000 followers on Facebook.

Likely blown onto the otherwise duck-less, stream-less, pond-less atoll island of Niue in a brutal storm in January 2018, Trevor found refuge in a roadside puddle and became “talk of the town” according to The New York Times. People began to feed him bread and then oats, rice and corn and when the dry season arrived, government officials and the fire department even ferried in barrels of water to refill his ‘makeshift pond.’

His puddle attracted other animals including a rooster and visitors to the island “clamoured” to snap selfies with him. Sadly, this week Trevor met his untimely end. He was killed by a stray dog.
