The Sense of Soubry

Celebrating Soubry – In resigning from the Conservative Party Anna Soubry MP has proven herself to be a true patriot

Anna Soubry MP shows herself to be principled and sensible whilst Nigel Farage yet again illustrates himself to care about nothing but power

Whilst Nigel Farage reneged on yet another pledge to step back from frontline politics this morning and claimed he’ll likely stand in South Thanet in 2017 according to the Mail on Sunday, Tory MP Anna Soubry’s interview with The Guardian on Friday presented an altogether more principled and sensible politician.

Speaking to Decca Aitkenhead in a feature titled: “What’s happened to our country? We’ve lost the plot?”, Soubry rightly observed how Britain has become a place where “everyone’s getting so worked up”. She highlighted how Twitter trolls have proposed she “be hanged” and praised Gary Lineker as “the sensible face of our country” for his remarks about immigrants; she apologised for the stupidity of her party supporting the Referendum Act “without understanding the consequences of a leave vote” and went as far as to say: “We told people it was binding, but now we don’t know, and it’s quite concerning that none of these things were explored before parliament decided. It’s all of our faults. All of us. Every single one of us”.

Though Soubry claimed she will honour her statement that when she “told people that if we voted leave, we would”, she also observed: “We’re now in a terrible constitutional crisis. We are on the verge of a constitutional crisis the likes of which we have not seen”. This single mother and former junior minister – sacked by Theresa May – is entirely right. We need more people like her.
