News that the former Chelsea Police Station is to be reoffered after an aborted sale acts a reminder of the ever decreasing number of police stations in Britain
Chelsea’s only police station closed on 1st December 2014 and in the time since has been occupied by squatters and subject to an aborted sale. Locals meanwhile have been left finding it harder to report crimes in person and now, this 4-storey building – which featured in the films The Party’s Over (starring Oliver Reed and produced by Peter O’Toole), Three Steps to the Gallows and Street Corner – is back on the market.
Described by selling agents Knight Frank as “a mid-20th century building of concrete frame construction of varying heights”, the former police station is unsurprisingly being marketed as having “potential as a residential development site”. It extends to 23,153 square foot and sits on 0.195 acres.
A tender deadline of Friday 9th October at 12-noon has been set and yet again, no doubt, another public building will be turned over to avaricious developers whilst residents are forced to follow Theresa May’s typically unhelpful advice. She believes: “Crimes should be reported via the Internet” and has instilled a policy of closing more and more police stations. Shame on her.
