Picture of the Week: Blood Swept Lands and Seas of Red

The Queen and Prince Philip visit Blood Swept Lands and Seas of Red

Our Picture of the Week was taken at the Tower of London last week. It shows the Queen and Prince Philip walking around the amazing Blood Swept Lands and Seas of Red installation that marks 100 years since the first full day of Britain’s involvement in the First World War.

Reflecting the magnitude of this important centenary, the image shows the scale of this powerful visual commemoration that has been created by the stage designer Tom Piper and the ceramic artist Paul Cummins.

By the time it is completed on the 11th November, the memorial will consist of 888,246 ceramic poppies and it will fill the Tower of London’s famous moat. Each poppy represents a British military fatality during the war and each has already been sold to raise funds which will be shared amongst six service charities.

This 60-acre spectacle is truly a superb way to remember the fallen. We will remember them.
