‘Middle-class homeless Heathrow couple’s’ views on housing others exposed
Yesterday, we reported on the case of Alan Lane and Katrina Smith, a couple who claim to have been living as “homeless” people at Heathrow Airport. Today, we share their views on housing others.
In a letter, sent from their then address, ‘The Palm House’ in Poole, Dorset, in 2003, Mr Lane and Miss Smith made reference to a planning application in their neighbourhood. Objecting to the proposed construction of a block of flats, these Nimbies claimed that they did not want see “the nature of [their] neighbourhood” changed and went as far as to state that they would not welcome “another ‘flatsland’”. Given this duo now complain that they find it impossible to find suitable housing despite Mr Lane earning £1,400 per month, perhaps he might now revise his opinions.
Adapting the old adage about glasshouses, Alan Lane and Katrina Smith may now have learnt that people in ‘Palm Houses’ shouldn’t throw stones.
