Ann Widdecombe will no doubt have spluttered her Kellogg’s Corn Flakes this morning when she picked up her copy of The Daily Telegraph on reading that a judge has let a convicted drug user walk free from court.

In suggesting that the unnamed defendant should “suffer no more than dabbling in cocaine than should a former Lord Chancellor [Michael Gove],” Judge Owen Davies QC showed his sense of humour and this was followed by Tim Kiely, who represented the defendant, tweeting: “Who says humour and justice don’t work?”

With Mr Gove now trailing in the Conservative leadership race as a result of his hypocrisy over drugs, he might well now regret drawing attention to his nocturnal activities in his thirties. Effectively he’s legalised cocaine by confession.
