Bedding down

Sarah Tucker recounts an interview with Sir David Frost

I was once lucky enough to interview Sir David Frost. He was one of my interviewees for a show I devised for Sky called Who’s Been Sleeping in My Bed? Others in the series included Lord Menuhin and Anita Roddick.

Sir David opted for Chewton Glen as his favourite hotel as it was close to where his children then boarded and he could fly down in a helicopter, stay there and be wonderfully looked after by the staff. The manager reminded me of Basil Fawlty – but a good one if you know what I mean.

Sir David Frost (1939 – 2013)

I wasn’t really interested in why Sir David chose the hotel. I wanted to ask about his interview with Nixon as, unlike most people on the planet, I thought he was an excellent President. Nixon disliked PR and was lousy at it and he probably had a lot of contempt for those he “served” (as really do most leaders). Nixon’s lies were what found him out only because, unlike those who’ve come since, he probably didn’t have as much on people as they had on him.

It was Nixon’s demise that saved David Frost’s career. He knew it and he told as much. For Who’s Been Sleeping in My Bed? he was a true professional and asked as much about me as I did about him. Unlike Nixon, I didn’t crack.
