Auntie disgraces herself once again

The BBC should never have employed Dave Smith

It now transpires that Dave Smith, former chauffeur to Jimmy Savile, had 22 convictions for child abuse dating back to 1966. Why, therefore, did the BBC employee him as a chauffeur in the 1980s? ‘Auntie’ has yet again shown herself to be a truly incompetent organisation.

Chauffeur Dave Smith’s convictions plainly fell on death ears when he was interviewed for his position at the BBC

Convicted criminals are generally forced to reveal their past indiscretions when interviewed for a job and that whomever at the BBC hired this monster without checking such is a disgrace. That individual – if indeed they still work for the Corporation – should be fired.

Equally curious is that the Daily Mail and others fail to mention the other individuals that Smith, who rather conveniently committed suicide yesterday, drove for. In their report the paper described him as “chauffeur to Savile and other celebrities during the 1980s”. The connections of these people – who might well be perfectly innocent – to Savile’s abuse should at least be looked into. It is time that this horrid chapter in the BBC’s history was properly cleaned up.
