Word of the Week – Gnomic

Our word of the week just had to be… Gnomic

An ambiguous and enigmatic adjective, our word of the week is “gnomic.” In summary it means: “Expressed in the nature of short, pithy maxims or aphorisms.”

Short and mysterious, not easily understood but “often seeming wise,” the playwright Samuel Beckett once commented: “I grow gnomic. It is the last phase” whilst the Stardust author Neil Guimann took the word into a more contemporary domain when he remarked: “I tweet, therefore my entire life has shrunk to 140 chunks of instant event and predigested gnomic wisdom. And swearing.”
